headspace Batemans Bay provides young people with access to Allied Health Professionals and community supports to assist young people to access the support they need to develop and maintain the skills and confidence to live healthy and happy lives. The centre also engages in community awareness and seeks to develop and implement innovative programs to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the region. Relationships Australia Canberra & Region is the lead agency for headspace Batemans Bay and is supported by a Consortium.

The headspace Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Access Worker provides case management services within the context of an integrated mental health service (headspace Batemans Bay) for young people and provides a culturally appropriate service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, or may be at risk of developing one. This position operates within the operational and geographical boundaries of the headspace Batemans Bay service.

Your new role

In consultation with the Manager, headspace Batemans Bay, the Youth Access Worker:

  • Engages with young people aged 12-25 who are (or are at risk of) experiencing a mental health or drug and alcohol problem
  • Provides a culturally safe and supportive approach to engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and other young people from culturally and socially diverse backgrounds
  • Facilitates access to headspace Batemans Bay services including mental health services, counselling, education/training support or support with alcohol and other drug issues
  • Advocates on behalf of young people whose care needs are being co-ordinated by headspace Batemans Bay (e.g. with other workers, schools, employers, carers etc.)

What you’ll need to succeed

  1. Relevant experience and/or tertiary qualifications in any of the following disciplines of social work, occupational therapy, intensive assertive case management or related disciplines
  2. Extensive experience in case management of young people within a multidisciplinary team
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to the cultural and mental health needs of young people (12-25 years) and their families to work holistically with young people around mental health, health and wellbeing needs, family and domestic violence and youth from diverse backgrounds
  4. Demonstrated ability to undertake screening and assertive management of clients and their carers to determine client care needs and assist clients to access necessary services

This is a full- time fixed-term position to 30 June 2023, with the possibility of extension, based in Batemans Bay, NSW.

This is an identified position. Being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine requirement of this role.
