Job description

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is continuing to grow. 

We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate community member to lead a small team who are responsible for the provision of culturally appropriate supports to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are on remand or serving sentences of imprisonment.  

The role

The Aboriginal Wellbeing and Support Coordinator provides cultural and wellbeing support, support connecting to family and community, and facilitates access to services to assist people in custody. They will also engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, organisations and external service providers and provide referrals to facilitate access and engagement with programs and services.

This is an identified position, and open only to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander persons. TALS considers being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement. We adopt the Commonwealth definition of Aboriginality.

This is a fixed term role until 30 June 2025.

Selection criteria

  1. Qualifications and experience in social work, community services, justice or related disciplines is required.
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of the legal and social issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  3. A demonstrated ability to assess, plan, manage, and co-ordinate services, support, and programs tailored to individual needs; and also provide guidance to others.
  4. Strong knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal communities including an ability to identify and link individuals in with culturally appropriate services. 
  5. Demonstrated understanding of the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in custody, including risk factors for re-offending and culturally appropriate and evidence based options to address those risk factors. 
  6. Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in relation to communicating effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the ability to build effective relationships with Aboriginal community organisations, stakeholders and service providers. 
  7. Experience with, or the ability to acquire, collaboration with the Corrective Services staff and external stakeholders and service providers. 
  8. Ability to liaise, negotiate, and exercise conflict resolution skills.
  9. Proven ability to be self-directed and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a high pressure environment using skills such as sensitivity, empathy, perseverance and resilience.

Requirements

The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and apply for a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration prior to commencement of employment.

A current driver’s licence is required, as travel may occur across Tasmania.
