Job description

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is Australia’s national statistical agency and an official source of independent, reliable information. We have been conducting Population Surveys since 1960, collecting data and statistics on the labour force and other characteristics of the population.

The ABS has numerous vacancies for casual Field Interviewer positions in the Screening team. The job is ideal for people who prefer working flexible hours.

About the area:

The ABS Household Survey Program consists of the regular Monthly Population Survey and other surveys collectively known as Special Social Surveys.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS) are part of an established program of Indigenous statistics collected by the ABS to monitor the social well-being of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

About the roles:
Interviewers are the public face of the ABS and have an important role in building strong relationships with our ABS household data providers (that is, the Australian public).

In this role, you will undertake household screening of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the wider community, using a supplied notebook computer and supplied telephony equipment.

In this screening role, you will visit households face-to-face and introduce them to the purpose and benefits of the surveys, such as how they inform work on the Closing the Gap initiative (see www.closingthegap.gov.au for further information).

You will support households in preparing for a follow-up interview by supplying reading materials and obtaining their contact information and availability. You will also undertake clerical/administrative work to communicate feedback to the office.

Skills, experience, and availability
We are seeking applicants that meet most or all of the below requirements:

  • Full availability to undertake survey screening work:
    • up to six days in a week including Saturday
    • five nights in a week
    • during school holidays
  • Availability to attend the initial training course beginning in October 2022
  • Unlimited use of a reliable, lockable car with comprehensive insurance cover
  • Possession of a valid Australian driver's licence
  • Ability to meet physical health requirements
  • Excellent computer skills*

*The ABS uses a range of computer programs. You should have a high level of competency in general computer skills and the ability to quickly learn how to use ABS software and systems. We will provide full training on these.

Favourable applicants will demonstrate an awareness of cultural sensitivities in approaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to any survey conducted by the ABS, and a willingness to continue learning and development on this topic.
