About the team

The International, Trade and National Security Division of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources has a range of roles available to help change Australia for the better.

Our teams work with international counterparts, other Government stakeholders and industry to:

Advise and align Government’s Industry, Science and Resource priorities to engage with global opportunities.
Engage and deliver programs that improve our trade, economic, diplomatic and industry outcomes.
Shape the department’s policy and program decisions with reference to national security considerations.

We’re looking for people from a range of backgrounds and experiences and are recruiting for the following vacancies across the three branches of the division:

Trade and International Branch – which oversees our trade policy and programs, international negotiations, standards frameworks, international ministerial engagements, and overseas counsellor network.

Assistant Manager, International and Strategic Engagement Section
Assistant Manager, Trade Policy Section
Assistant Manager, Trade Facilitation Section
Assistant Manager, Ministerial Travel and Overseas Counsellors Section.

International Science and Resources Branch – which manages the topical engagements with foreign governments, delivers key international partnership programs and provides policy advice on bilateral and multilateral science and resources matters.

Assistant Manager, North Asia and India Section.
Assistant Manager, International Resources Engagement Section

National Security Engagement Branch – which ensures national security considerations support the department’s policy decisions, and that the department’s interests are understood by the national security policy and intelligence community.

Assistant Manager, National Security Coordination Section
Assistant Manager, Economic Security Section
Assistant Manager, China Section
Assistant Manager, Intelligence Strategy Section

Program management – Help us manage critical investments in Australia’s trade and research capability through your knowledge of delivering systems and structures.
National security – Help us consider the geopolitical environment to inform the departments decisions and provide advice to government on economic security.

What you will do

You will undertake work that is very complex or sensitive and operate under broad direction. You will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a leadership role. You will contribute to strategic direction and undertake work activities with an awareness of possible impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for the department. Specifically, you will:

drive and deliver complex and critical work programs
undertake research and analysis to support stakeholders tasked with complex policy development and implementation
respond to rapidly changing priorities working collaboratively with colleagues and relevant stakeholders
build and leverage constructive relationships with colleagues, senior management and other relevant stakeholders
build capability in a team environment by coaching others, providing performance feedback, resolving differences and encouraging career development
have strong written, editorial and presentational skills, including the ability to develop effective and concise briefing documents
have familiarity (or the ability to gain familiarity) with regional and global geostrategic events, particularly as they impact on Australia’s economic growth and national security
exercise sound judgement, professional and personal integrity.
Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

The department requires the successful candidate to obtain and maintain a Baseline level security clearance. Positions in the National Security Engagement Branch require Negative Vetting Level 1 and above. Opportunities to upgrade also available.

Notes

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.

The department offers flexible work opportunities for many roles. National Security vacancies are based in Canberra, with all other positions offered flexibly, or via remote work arrangements. Please reach out to the contact officer to discuss this further.
