Job description

Job no: 510961
Employment type: Ongoing
Location: Canberra
Categories: Policy, Executive Level 1, Administration

About the team

The Industry Growth Division is responsible for setting Australia’s overarching industry policy. We work to ensure Australian industry is sustainable, resilient and can grow to its full potential. We do this using a range policy and regulatory functions, which influence business settings, build industry capability, manage economic risk and shocks, and support key sectors of the economy. This means working closely with industry stakeholders, other government policy portfolios, and state and territory governments.

The division also uses a project-based way of working. This provides opportunities for our staff to work with other teams on topics of interest and respond to significant events. We embrace a flexible working culture and, while we are predominantly based in Canberra, we welcome applications from candidates from all states and territories.

Our different teams work on:

  • cross-cutting issues like skills, energy, technology and trade
  • sectoral development aligned to government priorities like the National Reconstruction Fund
  • economic challenges, supply shortages and industry climate transition, including for heavy industries like steel
  • supporting government business initiatives in response to COVID-19, and
  • support for Indigenous businesses.

We have several immediate vacancies in teams responsible for priority industry sectors, industry participation in procurement, and industry strategy. We will use this recruitment process to match candidates to a role that fits your skills and interests.

This recruitment process may also be used to fill any arising vacancies over the next 6-12 months.

While the roles are advertised as full-time, we welcome discussions with successful candidates about flexible and part-time work options.

Our ideal candidate

  • Have experience thinking critically and exercising sound judgement to make robust recommendations and solve complex problems.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills - working well with others, engaging with stakeholders, and (depending on the final role) supervising others in your team.
  • Adapt to changing priorities to deliver quality outcomes for your senior executive and Minister.
  • Be self-aware, have personal drive, and show commitment to improvement.
  • Take initiative and ownership within your program of work, and as one of the division’s leaders.
  • Have well-developed written communication skills.

What you will do

As an Assistant Manager (Executive Level 1), you will contribute to the work output, strategic direction, and management of a small team. In this role, you will:

  • Drive a key stream of work within your team’s responsibilities.
  • Deliver timely, quality advice to your managers and government.
  • Lead preparation of written briefs on key issues, media and meetings occurring that are relevant to your team’s focus.
  • Maintain strong relationships with a range of key stakeholders in industry and across other parts of government, and consulting those stakeholders in preparation of your work.
  • Contribute to our positive workplace culture that values inclusion, diversity and respect.
  • Provide leadership to junior staff, including supporting their improvement and development through advice, training and mentoring.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance
