Why Your Role Matters:

The Assistant University Archivist position is responsible for providing operational support to the University Archivist by participating in the day-to-day activities to ensure proper management of University archives. You will be an integral part of the team that provides authoritative advice and support for the management of university records and archives. Using your knowledge of archival standards and principles and strong experience in database management, you will be helping to ensure security, preservation and physical and intellectual accessibility of University archives.

Responsibilities:

  • In cooperation with Records’ staff, identify relevant State records for transfer to the Archives.
  • Accessioning, arranging, describing and managing State archives and other university records identified as archives in accordance with the requirements of the State Records Act 1998.
  • Accessioning, arranging, describing and managing private archives and oral history interviews as directed.
  • Use and contribute to the development of archival control systems.
  • Provide research and reference services to UNSW clients and the general community.
  • Ability to undertake physical work and lifting as necessary as part of the duties of this position from time to time.
  • Deputise for the University Archivist as required.
  • Assist in the promotion of the archival collections.
  • Advise university staff and private donors on the full range of archival issues pertaining to recordkeeping and preservation, archival policies and legislative requirements.
  • Identify, appraise, select and acquire private archives in accordance with current collecting policies and guidelines.
  • Review and provide authoritative advice to enhance archival systems, operations, procedures and policies.

Who You Are:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in the field of archives and records, or significant completion, and individual membership of the Australian Society of Archivists.
  • Knowledge of archival standards and principles, including the records continuum theory.
  • Experience in the use of databases or systems controlling archival records.
  • Understanding of the State Records Act 1998 and its application to university archives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under minimal supervision and prioritise work in line with operational objectives.
  • Eligible for professional recognition by the Australian Society of Archivists.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate archival principles including records continuum theory into practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply recordkeeping legislation and standards, particularly in relation to the State Records Act 1998.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including effectiveness in liaison and consultation in providing authoritative advice on archival issues.
