About the role
We are seeking a Career Medical Officer to join our emergency department with a difference. As a Career Medical Officer, you will be responsible for the provision of safe, effective and appropriate patient centred medical care in a team based emergency department. At Calvary Mater Newcastle, the main point of difference for our emergency department is specialised focus on general medicine, oncology and haematology, palliative care, psychiatric and clinical toxicology presentations.

We are open to providing you with flexibility around your working hours, whether it is part time, weekends only, short shifts or school hours. We are also flexible to focus on your professional areas of interest such as seeing main patients and resuscitation level patients or only seeing the ambulatory care/fast track type patient or working primarily in our short stay ward managing short term emergency department admitted patients and discharge planning. There is room to expand on some non-clinical projects for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that all patients discharged from the department who require non-ED follow-up care receive a written discharge letter and advice about their condition, including the use of patient hand outs where available
- Ensure that patients are discharged to a safe environment
- Ensure that appropriate follow up arrangements are in place for patients being discharged home
- Demonstrated an understanding of risk management processes and systems
- Protects the rights of patients whilst respecting their values, customs and spiritual beliefs
What you bring
- Demonstrated high level of organisational, communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult with patients and their families, multidisciplinary health care team and broader internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team and ability to work independently in a complex environment utilising skills, judgement and expertise to provide a high standard of patient care and broader internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and staff and non-clinical staff working in the Emergency Medicine/Critical Care
- A desire to join a team committed to the care of others in a mission based organisation
The Calvary Mater Newcastle is an Affiliated Health Organisation providing services to both public and private patients primarily from the Hunter New England area. Current employees of NSW Health can request to have various leave entitlement balances transferred to Calvary Mater Newcastle on commencement.
