Samsara represents the coming together of co-founders, the Australian National University (ANU), one of Australia's largest retailers and Main Sequence Ventures, to address a big planetary problem and build the kind of solution the world has been waiting for. Not only will Samsara’s technology play a key role in solving the world's plastic recycling problems and eliminating the production of plastics from fossil fuels, our commercial potential is compelling.

We are a jaw droppingly unique company! Whilst we are an envirotech start-up creating infinite recycling to end plastic pollution, we are also building an incredible place to work. We know that to make the magic happen our day to day working lives and rewards for our efforts need to be unique and exciting for the extra effort put in.

Due to rapid growth and expansion we are looking for a Chief Innovation Officer.

Purpose of the role

As our Chief Innovation Officer, you will be a recognised world leader in polymer recycling and lead the development of the scientific strategy and execution of Samsara’s recycling processing chemistry and enzyme production initiatives. You will oversee and continue to build the Chemistry, Protein Engineering and Production departments, ensuring the development, implementation and efficient scale-up of chemical processing approaches and technologies in support of PET and nylon monomer production from enzyme depolymerisation in line with our business objectives.

Your role requires strong expertise in chemistry, chemical engineering as well as a keen understanding of scaling up production processes with demonstrated understanding of polymer chemistry and/or production including PET and nylon.

This position will require relocation to Sydney, NSW, or Canberra, ACT, Australia.

Key Responsibilities...

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement the scientific vision and strategy for polymer processing and monomer purification chemistry in support of enzyme depolymerisation of PET and nylon in support of virgin-quality monomer production in alignment with Samsara’s goals and objectives.
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop the Protein Engineering, Production, and Chemistry teams, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
  • Research and Development: Drive the research and development of novel processing chemistries in support of enzymatic depolymerisation, monomer purification technologies, enzyme engineering and production techniques, to be focused on optimisation and scaling up processes.
  • Production Scale-Up: Oversee the scale-up of monomer production from PET and nylon recycling production lines as well as support enzyme production, ensuring efficiency, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Product Development, Business Development, and Operations, to align scientific initiatives with company goals.
  • Project Management: Plan, prioritise, and execute scientific projects, managing resources, budgets, and timelines effectively.
  • Quality Control: Ensure the quality and consistency of enzyme production, implementing quality control processes and standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed of regulatory requirements and industry standards, ensuring that all production processes adhere to relevant regulations.
  • Innovation and Intellectual Property: Identify opportunities for innovation and contribute to the development and protection of intellectual property.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with external partners, research institutions, and stakeholders to drive scientific advancements and strategic partnerships.

Qualifications and Experience...

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or a related field; advanced degrees preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years demonstrated leadership experience in industrial polymer chemistry with an understanding and/or experience in protein engineering, enzyme production, and related fields.
  • Proven track record in scaling up chemical processes in support of polymer recycling and/or experience in enzyme production processes in an industrial setting.
  • Strong knowledge of biochemical processes, protein engineering, and production methodologies.
  • Experience in leading and managing scientific teams, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and drive scientific advancements in the field.
Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to enzyme production.
  • Strong project management and strategic planning skills.

If you are a visionary scientific leader with a passion for scaling up enzyme production and contributing to sustainable technology, we invite you to apply for the Chief Science Officer role at Samsara Eco.
