Climate Change and Resilience Consultant

Our climate is changing, from increasing temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns, to rising sea levels and more frequent and severe weather events. Alongside this, the global economy is embarking on a low carbon transition. At WSP, we help governments, businesses and communities plan for, and adapt to these changes. We also support clients recover and build back better after times of shock. Through the Climate Change and Resilience space, we provide our clients with the expertise they need to be Future Ready, navigating the uncertainties of a low-carbon transition, identifying climate-related risks, and developing strategies to build resilience to emerging shocks and stresses.

The opportunity:

The successful candidate will provide support to WSP's growing Climate Change and Resilience team within our wider Sustainability Group with a focus on developing resilience and climate adaptation strategies and undertaking climate change risk assessments for businesses, governments, and communities.

With a good understanding of multi-sector climate change and resilience challenges, you will help our clients to understand how they might be impacted and develop forward-looking strategies, policies, and action plans that help them plan for future uncertainty. Working as part of a national team, you will be expected to undertake some travel, working remotely with our clients and their teams to develop workshops and stakeholder engagement that form part of the strategies and applicable assessments.

A typical day for you:

Your key responsibilities, with support from your team, may include the following:

  • Support senior consultants in preparing climate change and resilience action plans and undertake climate change and disaster risk assessments
  • Analyse climate change and other environmental data
  • Provide background research and report writing support
  • Develop climate change and resilience strategies for large-scale developments, infrastructure projects and local and state governments
  • Prepare, facilitate, and report on workshop and stakeholder engagement activities
  • Contribute to project proposals and business development
  • Assisting in the preparation of reports and other documentation under supervision.
What we'll love about you:
  • Degree in a relevant field of study including urban sustainability, environmental science, climate change or other urban planning/development fields
  • Up to 2 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ability to use basic theoretical knowledge of climate change and resilience principles to analyse and interpret information
  • Good understanding of national and international climate change and resilience challenges and opportunities
  • Understanding of Australian climate change and resilience legislation, processes and approaches
  • Preferable experience with risk rating tools and guidelines (Climate Change Impacts and Risk Management: A guide for business and government (AGO 2006), ISO 14091, ISO 31000 or other)
  • Preferable experience of using climate change projections and impact models
  • Preferable experience with of resilience/climate adaptation strategies
  • Strong verbal communication skills and confidence presenting to colleagues and clients
  • Excellent writing ability and the capacity to generate thorough and engaging reports
  • Strategic thinker who can understand inter-dependencies and how they relate to strategic outcomes
  • Strong quantitative/data analytics skills
  • Willingness to travel interstate to deliver workshops, undertake stakeholder engagement and conduct site visits.
