About Biodiversity Council
Our vision is a better informed and motivated Australian public who act to reverse the loss of nature - the plants, animals and ecosystems essential to sustaining life and culture. The Biodiversity Council will be a trusted, independent expert voice advocating to the public and decision makers for the role of robust scientific evidence and Traditional Knowledge in managing and caring for Australian biodiversity.

The Council will grow public and policy recognition of the importance of biodiversity and Country for human health, wellbeing and prosperity, the consequences of losing or degrading biodiversity and solutions to avoid harm and drive recovery. We will build networks of scientific, First Nations and community champions to help drive an increase in political and community awareness, support and action for biodiversity and Country.

We will directly inform decision-making by working with Ministers, policy makers and industry leaders to promote evidence-based solutions to address risks and deliver benefits for biodiversity and Country.

About the Role
The Communication and Engagement Manager (CEM) will work closely with the Executive Director, Expert Council Chair and Councillors to develop and implement high-profile communication and engagement campaigns in areas of public profile, community and private sector engagement, fundraising, policy impact and biodiversity outcomes.

The role supports the Council’s mission to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by promoting the application of rigorous science and Traditional Knowledge to influence political, industry and policy decisions and community actions; and supports fundraising and the growth of the Council’s supporter base.

The CEM will execute successful media and communications campaigns aimed at establishing the Council during its start-up phase as a prominent and trusted voice for biodiversity, developing materials and platforms for the Executive Director and Councillors to engage with policy makers, and other key stakeholders, and managing all interactions with the media.

The incumbent will provide strategic advice to the Executive Director, Advisory Board and Expert Council on communications and engagement issues, including the handling of controversial, politically sensitive and high-profile topics, and the engagement of specific stakeholder groups, including sensitive groups within complex environments.

For a full list of responsibilities, please review the attached Position Description.

The incumbent will have an in-depth understanding of ecology and environmental management and policy in Australia, and extensive experience in the planning and implementation of large-scale communication and stakeholder engagement programs for high-profile science organisations.

They will have proven experience providing executive level leadership on communications and engagement to a large and geographically dispersed organisation, including for high-profile and sensitive matters within complex stakeholder environments.
