Job description

  • Looking to make a tangible difference in the lives of remote Aboriginal communities?
  • Receive an attractive salary circa $75,000 – $115,000 (depending on experience and qualifications) plus super and salary sacrificing options!
  • Relocation assistance and a generous six weeks of annual leave on offer!
  • Develop your research skills and maintain a work/life/study balance with 2 weeks study leave!

Katherine West Health Board (KWHB) is an industry renowned provider of preventative, clinical and emergency primary health care in the Northern Territory. Founded in 1998, we are a fully accredited Aboriginal community-controlled health service based across the rolling river and desert country of the remote outback region to the south west of Katherine in Australia’s Northern Territory.

We have partnered with the University of Queensland (UQ) as part of the Synergy Project Grant. The aim of this research is to eliminate endemic sexually transmitted infections in remote Australia. Due to this rewarding and life changing research that we’re conducting, we are now looking for a Community Engagement Officer – Sexual Health Research Project to join our multi-disciplinary team on a full-time basis. This is a four-year fixed term contract.

Your next opportunity

In this role, you will work closely with the UQ Research team to ensure the needs of the community are informing the university's ongoing research projects in the region. This will influence UQ's subsequent intervention strategies, designed and developed following extensive consultations with the community. This is a truly unique opportunity for someone passionate about advancing the health outcomes of remote Aboriginal communities, who is looking to work alongside reputable researchers such as Professor James Ward, a prolific infectious diseases epidemiologist and a national leader in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.

Working closely with the UQ Senior Research Associate, your core duties will fall within the following themes:

  • Recruit and onboard Aboriginal staff to conduct the study;
  • Develop and coordinate consultation groups; and
  • Develop and review study activities and focus groups.

You will also liaise with a wide range of stakeholders and meet regularly with the UQ research team to discuss the overall project and current timelines.

Please note: This role will involve regular travel, typically spending at least half of your time out in surrounding remote communities, staying overnight and travelling via 4WD, dirt roads and light aircraft as required.

A rewarding role - in more ways than one

This is a truly unique opportunity for you to escape the daily grind of city work and make a genuine difference to some of the most remote communities in Australia. Unlike other community engagement efforts that focus on collating feedback from communities after a methodology has been developed, this role will see you proactively engaging with the locals to ensure their needs and cultural imperatives are informing the overall approach.

This role comes with an attractive salary circa $75,000 – $115,000 (dependent on your qualifications, skills, and experience) PLUS super and salary sacrificing options.

You will also have access to fantastic benefits including:

  • Relocation assistance negotiable for the right candidate
  • Generous 6 weeks of annual leave
  • Travel allowance provided when working away from Katherine (including accomodation)
  • Work/Life/Study Balance: 2 weeks of study leave available!
  • Ongoing learning and development opportunities to further your research skills
What you'll bring to the team

While a recognised qualification in a health-related discipline will be advantageous, we also encourage candidates without these qualifications who have significant experience in engaging with remote communities to apply for the position.

Crucial to your success will be your ability to strategically manage this project and effectively meet your deadlines. You will be a highly empathetic and culturally-aware individual with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively build relationships and communicate with a range of stakeholders.

Moreover, you will be proactive and have the skills to work both autonomously and within a multi-disciplinary team.

We strongly encourage people with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage to apply for this position.

Please note: Before joining our team, you will need to have or be willing to obtain a current Driver’s License, an Ochre Card and have completed a National Police Check. You will also be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

This is your chance to join an Aboriginal Health Organisation and make a real difference to some of the most remote communities in Australia. Apply Now!
