Job description

Connected Beginnings Officer - 3 month contract

Location: Derby, Western Australia

Employment Type: Full Time - 3 month contract

Remuneration: $57,548.40 - $72,312.50 per annum pro rata + superannuation + salary sacrifice

The position is responsible to support the integration of early childhood, child and family health, and family support services in a number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities so that children are healthy and best prepared for school. To work as part of the DAHS team including World Vision Australia in providing a quality and client focused environment, addressing health and developments issues and ensuring that services are delivered in a culturally safe way.

About You

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. (ACCHS) and the issues facing these organisations in their service delivery.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including negotiation and consultation skills and the ability to proactively establish and sustain effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong organisational skills, the capacity to successfully manage competing priorities, maintain attention to detail and meet deadlines.
  • Current “C” Class motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • High level of integrity in maintaining confidentiality is a pre-requisite for this position.
  • Well-developed time management skills.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance requirements.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal culture and family groups around Derby.
  • Working with Children’s Check.
  • National Police clearance.

The position involves working within a multicultural organisation where the majority of employees, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

About the Organisation

Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) providing holistic primary health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Derby and surrounding communities. DAHS provide a wide range of innovative public health programs in addition to direct comprehensive primary health care services. It is required to comply with a number of Service Agreements with Commonwealth and State departments and agencies, and to operate with a number of government and private medical and health delivery organisations. The operating environment for ACCHS Australia-wide - has become increasingly complex and changeable in recent years and this is likely to continue.

Key Responsibilities for this position are:

The scope of this position will include, but is not limited to:

Community Liaison

  • Assist with the improvement of health outcomes for children so they are ready to commence school.
  • Facilitate ongoing communication links with the community by liaising with clients and notifying them of their appointment times where appropriate.
  • Encourage and help community to attend clinics and specialist appointments.
  • Participant in developing and implementing programs so that children are healthy and best prepared for school.
  • To support staff in the provision of culturally appropriate health and health education to Aboriginal people in the region.
  • Maintain engagement with families to provide support, promote health and wellbeing, deliver prevention and early intervention strategies.
  • Ensure there is a culturally safe liaison between the health professionals and the clients.
  • Support and encouraged clients to attend the DAHS Child Health Services.
  • Promote health, wellbeing, prevention and early intervention strategies as part of the Child and Maternal Health team.
  • Provide transport and liaise with the community, collecting clients for appointments, plane/bus where patients lack transport and to be responsible for the safe provision of client transport.
  • Maintain statistics of client transport and provide regular reports to line manager as required.

Advocacy

  • Participate in patient case management as requested.
  • Support client during the appointment by brokering any language barriers as requested.
  • Assist Child and Maternal Health team to deliver program education in a community relevant way.
  • Encourage families to access health services early.

General

  • Liaise with administration and assist with such things as notifying community of meetings.
  • Duties require liaison with Broome Health Service, DAHS Clinic Health Staff, DAHS Reception staff, Pathology Department, Pharmacy and other Aboriginal organisations.

Team Contribution

  • Contribute to process improvement and adhere to all DAHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in Performance Review process.
  • Contribute to effective team performance.
  • Follow all safety procedures and contribute to a safe work environment.

Develop and Maintain Linkages

  • Liaise and cooperate as required with other Project and Policy staff in DAHS.

Self-Management & Team Contribution

  • Contribute to process improvement and adhere to all DAHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in Performance Review process.
  • Contribute to effective team performance.
  • Follow all safety procedures and contribute to a safe work environment.

Culturally Appropriate Ways of Working

  • Personally demonstrate through consistent behaviour understanding of, respect for and compliance with culturally sensitive ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, staff and communities.

Other

  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and applies quality improvement principles to all duties performed.
  • Attends workshops and training as required.
  • Attend and participate in Staff Development Days.
