The mental health unit provides access to acute psychiatric services closer to home for people living in the region. It includes 14 private bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom, courtyards and entertainment and activity areas in both open and secure ward layouts. The development of the unit was a recommendation of the 2008 Hope Report that followed a coronial inquiry into the alcohol and drug-related deaths of 22 indigenous people in the region.
