We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Compliance Specialist at Perth Head Office, on a 12-Month Maximum Term basis.


About this role


As the Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for supporting Western Power in meeting its compliance obligations through the effective implementation of the organisation’s legislative compliance management framework and associated policies and procedures. This position will also act as the appointed decision-maker for all Freedom of Information requests under the Freedom of Information Act 1992 (FOI Act) within Western Power.


As the Compliance Specialist, you will be:

  • Managing FOI applications including:
    • Undertaking preliminary assessments of FOI applications on initial receipt to determine whether an application is within the scope of the FOI Act and/or third-party consultation is required
    • Co-ordinating all requests for access to documentation via FOI applications, determining fees and charges payable and directing searches by responsible business functions and Information & Communication Technology business area
    • Determining whether, if released, the documents identified would have a detrimental effect on the functioning of government or harm the interests of private individuals or commercial organisations
    • Ensuring Western Power meets legislative time limits for dealing with applications and where necessary makes applications for extensions of time
    • Preparing and issuing full written reasons (notice of decision) for allowing or denying access to documents.
  • Developing and implementing compliance training including the development of new Code of Conduct Training. Supporting management in the implementation of relevant training.
  • Preparing reports on the status of compliance training to senior management.
  • Providing guidance and advice to the business about conflicts of interest and gifts, and processing associated paperwork.
  • Managing compliance content on Western Power’s intranet.
  • Raising awareness of compliance issues and contributing to achieving the desired compliance culture.
  • When required, providing timely and accurate compliance advice to assist Western Power in meeting its compliance obligations.
  • Supporting the Area in the execution of Corporate Compliance Area deliverables as required.
  • Assisting with the testing of a new compliance management system.


About you


We are seeking someone with experience and attributes that include:


  • A Bachelor’s Degree qualification in Commerce, Law or other relevant discipline.
  • Police Clearance required.
  • Minimum 4 years previous sound experience and knowledge in legal, compliance or auditing position.
  • Knowledge and understanding of governance processes.
  • Good written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Good analytical skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong customer focus, ability to build relationships, and work in a collaborative team environment.

Knowledge in freedom of information is desirable but not essential.
