About the role
The Indigenous Healing Service (IHS) provides healing, support, counselling and a therapeutic response to children, young people and their families who are affected by child sexual abuse, family and domestic violence and/or grief and loss. The IHS assists children, young people and adults to recover from the harmful impacts of trauma, and assists families and communities to support children and young people in the healing process. The Counsellor will be responsible for ensuring the provision of professional child and family counselling services in consultation with the Principal Practitioner and Pilbara Services Manager. The Counsellor position reports to the Principal Practitioner WA/NT.
The Counsellor aims to achieve the following outcomes in a culturally and trauma safe way:
- The harmful impacts of child sexual abuse and/or violence are reduced.
- Children, young people and families/caregivers are better protected from future sexual abuse and violence.
- The likelihood of children and young people sexually abusing and/or being violent to other children is reduced.
Key Selection Criteria
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
- Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or Relevant Experience.
- Counselling experience in working with children and families in a therapeutic setting.
- A track record of working collaboratively and the demonstrated capacity to negotiate and liaise with internal and external stakeholders including, Department for Communities, other agencies and the community.
