Job description

About our Team

The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific is a gold OA journal, part of the Lancet's global initiative to advocate for health-care quality and access in all regions of the world. We are a small and friendly team handling a high volume of submissions while priding ourselves on offering a personalised service to the researchers who publish with us.

About the Role

The Deputy Editor will work with fellow Senior Editors and the Editor-in-Chief in all aspects of the organisation and preparation of the journal.

You will encounter some of the best research in Western Pacific region, collaborate with a regional and global authorship base, and get to work closely with other journal editors as well as our production, marketing, communications, and administration.

The role is based in a location in Australia or China where Elsevier has an office. For this particular role, we do not expect daily attendance in the office but believe that regular in-person team meetings can be beneficial for us all. You will have a clearly defined schedule of work, and the way you use your weekly hours to complete it will be up to you.

Responsibilities

Act on behalf of the Editor-in-Chief when required

Contribute critically to the selection of the journal content, and shaping journal development

Identify experts to act as peer reviewers on selected submissions

Write editorials

Commission content to build our journal’s profile among the communities we serve and handle special project content as necessary

Develop and maintain links with the regional health community to solicit high-quality research and thought leadership for the journal

Attend conferences and other events, to represent the journal, to identify suitable topics and authors, and to keep up-to-date with current developments in regional health

Suggesting and helping to develop new initiatives for future development and enhancement of the journal

Requirements

Higher degree (PhD) in a relevant discipline (eg, biomedical science, public health, global health), or a medical degree (MD)

Research experience in a relevant field or experience in the wider development community. Post-doc experience is desirable

Substantial editorial experience at Senior Editor level, with a good understanding of all aspects of the journal publishing process and of running an editorial team. Experience of managing remotely would be an advantage as would prior experience of working an online or open access journal

First-class critical analysis skills

A genuine commitment to equity in health and health care

An unfailingly can-do attitude

Enjoy collaborating with teams to deliver successful projects and initiatives on time

Have a natural ability to engage, influence and build relationships with stakeholders, teams and our community

Be a great problem solver, with analytical approach to solve complex issues and highly focussed on results

Work in a way that works for you

We promote a healthy work/life balance across the organisation. With an average length of service of 9 years, we are confident that we offer an appealing working prospect for our people.
