Job Description


The role of The Sydney Morning Herald’s Deputy Photographic Editor is to support the photographic manager in driving the visual agenda in digital and print, by facilitating the most effective, efficient and comprehensive coverage of newsworthy and engaging events and stories. To do this, the deputy photo editor must be well informed about the daily news agenda, to ensure the creation and sourcing of high quality photographs/visuals from important news events and stories. They must be a self starter, resourceful, ready to collaborate, organise and seek out visuals, for immediate use online, and for print. They must be highly organised, communcative, creative, flexible and a supportive team player.


Qualifications


You will have the experience to:

  • Organise, create a considered roster, rostering a balanced and sufficient number of photographers and photo editors with relevant skills, to render the best visuals and presentation
  • Facilitate the creation of artistic and thoughtful photographic coverage by understanding, brainstorming and communicating /briefing photographers effectively
  • Closely monitor the news agenda to stay ahead of requests for news driven images, while also responding to the picture needs signaled by the editors throughout the day
  • Attend relevant internal news conferences, with a focus on finding the best images for digital, splash and page one
  • Manage day-to-day changes to photographer availability (i.e. absenteeism, etc.) in live roster and EBD - ensure adequate staffing ahead of day to day where possible
  • Support the managing photo editor with day-to-day commissioning of assignments locally and nationally, photo researching, gallery creation and social media posts
  • Support the visual agenda by providing feedback, coaching to photographers where appropriate
  • Grow and maintain the high standard of photography by being up to date with photographic trends, talent, nationally and internationally to ensure quality and progress
  • Focus on producing diverse, engaging, visually stimulating visuals and presentations
  • Support managing photo editor in driving key photographic agendas in the newsroom by being : collaborative, communicative, creative, organised, resourceful, effective and a supportive team player.
