Job description

The Director provides leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of operational policies, practices, procedures and strategic initiatives in relation to Youth Justice community-based service delivery.

The Director also provides evidence based advice regarding operational and strategic policy programs and services that meet the requirements of the Youth Justice Act 1992 and respond in new ways to youth offending.

The Director will work closely with other internal departmental programs, central agencies of government, other State and Commonwealth government departments and the non-government and private sectors to achieve improved client and community outcomes.

The Director key responsibilities are:

  • Lead and influence the development and implementation of statewide programs and projects and contemporary advisory and capacity building systems leading to the enhancement of service delivery and outcomes for young people in the youth justice system.
  • Lead the provision of specialist and culturally competent advice, expertise and assistance to staff and other service partners on complex, high risk cases and emerging areas of practice.
  • Lead and manage high performing teams in the provision of advice and analysis on strategic programs, practice and legislative proposals for youth justice, community-based and therapeutic services, in alignment with the Youth Justice Strategy Action Plan.
  • Develop and advise on strategic directions and planning priorities and contribute to setting the strategic agenda in alignment with the Youth Justice Strategy.
  • Drive the departmental vision, goals and values and proactively lead and manage in a style consistent with the Youth Justice Strategy Action Plan and Framework for Practice.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships across the organisation and with key external parties to support the development of a system in Queensland of quality youth justice practice, promoting a positive and accountable public image and the development of collaborative partnerships to support quality service delivery outcomes.
  • Provide authoritative and strategic advice to senior management on issues relating to youth justice practice, performance, frameworks, data, evaluations and evidence in accordance with the various Acts and the department's policy, procedures, strategies and priorities.
  • Contribute through the Youth Justice Services leadership team to the analysis of key legislative, policy and practice issues that impact on the delivery of effective and efficient service delivery to young people and families.
  • Manage the human, financial and operational resources of the work unit to ensure the achievement of strategic and business objectives.
  • Ensure appropriate and ongoing development of staff to foster a team culture that values performance, continuous improvement, innovation and accountability.
  • Represent the department at a senior level as required, including at interdepartmental and intergovernmental meetings and associated management committees.
  • Provide high-quality authoritative and strategic advice to the Assistant Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director Youth Justice Statewide Services on issues relating to Youth Justice.
  • Promote an accountable, fair and safe work environment through the implementation of management practices, policies and procedures, including workplace, health and safety, equal employment opportunity, anti-discrimination and performance management.
