Employment Type: Full-time

Duration: 3-year fixed-term appointment

Remuneration: $218,408 pa Level E (plus 17% employer superannuation)

The Opportunity

The Director, Institute for Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research (ISCRR) will lead ISCRR to deliver high-impact and actionable research that helps improve the health and well-being of Australian workers and their families. Aligning with our partners at WorkSafe Victoria, this critical role will have responsibility for setting the institute’s strategic research agenda, developing and guiding research programs, and fostering local, national and international networks and collaborations.

As the successful candidate, your primary role will be to lead, manage and be accountable for the day-to-day performance of the Institute and deliver on ISCRR’s strategic vision for 2025-2027 and beyond.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Leadership: Drive ISCRR’s vision forward, steering day-to-day operations
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Foster collaborations with WorkSafe, regulators, and industry leaders to amplify our research impact and forge strategic alliances
  • Thought Leadership: Contribute to scientific and public policy debates in priority areas such as workplace health, mental health, safety and injury recovery
  • People Leadership: Directly supervise 4-6 senior staff and oversee the ISCRR team comprising 12-18 staff and 1-3 post-graduate students
  • Team Development: Build and empower a high-performing professional team, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation
  • Research Excellence: Oversee the production of impactful research, evaluations, and knowledge transfer activities
  • Financial Stewardship: Manage a dynamic budget to deliver on ISCRR’s commitments efficiently

This position will be designated as a Professor (Practice) in Workplace Safety, Health and Wellbeing. Practice Academics represent a specialised subset within Research and Teaching academia, typically drawn from professional practice backgrounds, who are actively involved in industry-based research. It's important to note that current academic status is not a prerequisite for consideration for this role.

Suitably qualified applicants will also be considered at an Associate Professor level.

  • Visionary Leadership: Ability to inspire and lead teams towards ambitious goals, driving innovation and excellence in research and practice
  • Strategic Thinker: Strong capability in setting and executing strategic agendas, aligning organisational objectives with broader industry and societal needs
  • Collaborative Approach: Proven track record of building and nurturing partnerships across diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, industry, academia, and community organisations
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional communicator adept at translating complex research into impactful messages for diverse audiences, including policymakers, industry leaders and the public
  • Financial Acumen: Experience in financial management and resource allocation, ensuring efficient delivery within budgetary constraints.
  • The appointee will have:
    • A doctoral qualification in a relevant field and/or be recognised as a leading authority in a profession directly related to ISCRR’s priority areas; or
    • an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training.
