As you’re reading this you’re probably asking yourself “What am I doing looking at a job ad?! I do NOT want a job, I run my own business and don’t want to work for someone else again!”
But, it feels like mission impossible right now to get ahead as an owner-builder because of all the blows that have hit the industry over the last three years, right?
So maybe it’s time to consider doing something differently?
As it happens, we’re NOT looking to recruit someone with an employee mindset, we're looking for a business partner.

Here’s the backstory on this opportunity.
We’re a well-established, successful, very profitable vertically integrated property development, building, civils and marketing business based in SEQ.
There are currently two partners who lead and fund the business, together with a professional management team including a GM, Financial Controller, construction admin and accounts teams.
Our journey has had plenty of ups and downs, but has brought us to the fortunate place where we have created a business with a strong balance sheet through continual re-investment.
Additionally, we genuinely love business, mentoring the people on our teams and watching them succeed personally and professionally.
We’ve built this business to the point where it’s a well-oiled machine that delivers predictably strong profits, but it still requires the day-to-day oversight and hands-on supervision of a qualified builder with a head for business.
In the start we had a Building Director who retired approx 8 years ago and since then we’ve filled the role of Construction Manager with an employee, and we’ve continued to oversee things ourselves.
But, as you know, being an employee and being an owner are two different mindsets, and we know that if we want to step back, we need an owner on the ground, not just an employee.
What we want to do at this stage of our journey is to spend more time working in a Family Office capacity and mentor the leaders in this business, so our plan is to add a Director of Construction to the team, to become a third business partner who would also enjoy profit share on top of a salary package.

Who are we looking for?
This definitely isn’t for everybody. We know we’re literally looking for a needle in a haystack, but based on the perfect storm of economic issues, the person we’re looking for could be ready for an opportunity like this now.
If you’re this person you’ve probably got a family, you’ve been self-employed for 5 + years, you’re based in Brisbane or surrounds and you run (or have run) your own residential construction business.
At the moment everything is on you, you’re working all the hours you possibly can and have to wear 17 hats in any given week from sales through to supervisor and everything in between.
With materials sky-rocketing, good employees being difficult to find and customers getting even more price-sensitive, the already small margins feel like they might as well be invisible.
Despite your best efforts you just can’t see how you’ll ever get your weekends back and even if you did there’s not really enough money there to set yourself up for retirement the way you’d hoped.
When you meet with your accountant it’s so overwhelming that you feel like you need a beer just to get through it, with the QBCC compliance requirements getting more and more complicated, wages going up, and the economy stalling, you're wondering if you can even keep doing this, even if you did want to. But you just can’t see yourself getting a job and being an employee.
You have too many conversations about never being there for the kids, you are stressed all the time, but you honestly don’t know what to do to fix it.

However, to be considered for this ‘partnership’ you’ll need to
👉Have a proven track record of being a solid operator - being able to deliver a high quality build, on time and within budget
👉Be a confident leader who inspires the best from your people and is able to adapt your style so that different people can work together effectively
👉Have a head for numbers and make decisions that help move the business towards the goals we have set - for example know when it makes sense to reward the team for a job well done and when it’s necessary to pull people into line for wasting materials on site
👉Prepared to roll your sleeves up and be on site to oversee things, spot potential issues and ensure standards are maintained and team morale is in a good place
👉Have a QBCC license and work towards acting as the licensee for the construction business
👉Do things with a legacy mindset - as in - how is this action impacting my reputation and the reputation of the business long term.
