The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Disability & Complex Needs Service Practitioner to provide a critical role at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre.

About the business unit

Corrections Victoria is responsible for the implementation of policies, programs and services that ensure the safe and secure containment of prisoners, and that seek to rehabilitate offenders by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour.

As part of the Corrections and Justice Services group, the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC) is a 568-bed medium to maximum-security facility for female offenders located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice.

The DPFC operates a Needs Based Precinct model, with prisoners accommodated in precincts aligned to their identified needs. The DPFC has two new buildings as part of its specialist Health and Wellbeing Precinct, dedicated to supporting prisoners with mental health, cognitive impairment, physical disabilities and complex needs.

DPFC is undertaking a project to pilot a model for women prisoners who have disability and complex needs. The pilot will seek to identify best practice in custodial practices and develop a specialised disability pathway focussed on women prisoners with cognitive impairment and complex needs.

About the role

Under the direction of the Disability and Complex Needs Coordinator, the DCNS Practitioner will operate from the Rosewood Unit (Health and Wellbeing Precinct) providing initial assessment, ongoing intervention and will facilitate life skills programs.

Some of your duties will include:

• Deliver occupational therapy (OT) assessment and intervention to female prisoner cohort within a maximum-security setting.
• Applies sound theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in promoting OT service delivery, collating referrals and conducting assessments on eligibility for therapeutic program participation.
• Undertakes advanced therapeutic interventions, including cross agency collaboration and the facilitation of therapeutic and life skills programs.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Experience in the provision of coordination and behavioural interventions across vulnerable cohorts who display complex needs (mental health, cognitive and/or physical disability).
• An understanding of positive behaviour support and experience in working with clients who live with intellectual disability and/or who display behaviours of concern.
• In-depth understanding of intellectual disability, acquired brain injury and cognitive impairment and the assessments, supports and services available to assist

Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in Disability or Allied Health (Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Behavioural Sciences, Nursing) is desirable.
• At least 3 years' experience in a relevant setting
