About AIMS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

We are a trusted advisor, a partner and employer of choice, and we value integrity, innovation, collaboration and respect. AIMS’ research of Australia’s tropical marine ecosystems guides their effective environmental management and contributes to our understanding of similar ecosystems around the world.

Our research seeks to deliver practical benefit to all Australians and supports the sustainable use of our tropical marine estate. Governments, reef managers, industry and the wider community look to our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions about our iconic Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf, and Arafura and Timor Seas. AIMS expert teams at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique datasets, cutting-edge laboratories, and a fleet of modern research vessels.

About this exciting opportunity

Joining our Marine Fauna Ecology and Pressures team, you’ll be part of a group who are working to understand and manage the ecology and biology of marine fauna and the associated pressures on them. Connectivity plays a fundamental role in the resistance and resilience of populations and communities to disturbance. Modelling and quantifying patterns of connectivity, which could include the movement of organisms and genes or the flow of biomass and carbon, is essential for identifying ecologically sensible, socially acceptable, and economically viable solutions to the pressures and threats acting on marine ecosystems.

As an Ecological Modeller in Connectivity Science, you will thrive on the challenge of solving problems related to connectivity in ecological systems, particularly in ways that span local to broad-scale processes which underpin how ecosystems are structured and function. Drawing on your advanced analytics, transdisciplinary adaptability and creativity, you will develop practical solutions based on the best available evidence and sound logic to empower stakeholders and progress the field. You will lead and contribute to a diverse suite of projects involving quantitative Connectivity Science from conception through to publication, working in collaboration with AIMS scientists and under limited direction.

About you

Underpinning your suitability for this position will be your PhD in science (e.g., oceanography, ecology, engineering, genetics), as well as your experience developing innovative models of connectivity that utilise sound assumptions in concert with the available evidence to develop workable solutions in relevant coding languages, mathematical, statistical and spatial software. Known for your ability to problem solve and develop practical solutions, you will also be able to demonstrate your:

  • Experience with software including R, Python, MATLAB, ArcGIS, QGIS.
  • Proven track record of scientific achievements and extensive knowledge in this field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that underpin a collaborative and respectful culture in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Personal qualities and the ability to work to tight deadlines and to work independently.

AIMS acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia's first scientists. We pay our deepest respects to Elders past, present and future, and the custodians of the land and sea Country on which we work.
