What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the Career Medical Officer (CMO) is to provide independent, high level medical care, including responsibility for the assessment, investigation and initial management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department and admitted to inpatient wards. The CMO will be supervised by specialist staff, and provide supervision and support to junior medical staff in the Emergency Department. The position can also serves to support the completion of the Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) or Emergency Medicine Diploma (EMD) through the Australian College of Emergency Medicine

About Wagga Wagga Base Hospital

Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH) is one of the busiest rural hospitals in NSW with over 300 beds, 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births and approximately 11,000 operations annually.

A significant three stage re-build of WWBH is well underway, with the third and final stage of the redevelopment, a six-storey Ambulatory Care Building, commencing in 2018. Construction is due to be completed late 2020 with operational commissioning in 2021.

Stages 1 and 2 completed in 2017, delivered a new 50-bed Mental Health Building and a 7-storey Acute Services Building. Wagga Wagga Base Hospital includes an emergency department, operating theatres, women’s and children’s inpatient unit, intensive care and high dependency unit, angiography suites, additional inpatient beds and a rooftop helipad. Specialties include cardiovascular, gastroenterology, renal medicine, obstetrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry and paediatrics.

In total, the NSW Government is investing $431 million in the development of Wagga Wagga Health Service. It represents one of the largest health redevelopment in the state. Further information about the WWHS Redevelopment is available here

Qualifications - External * MBBS or equivalent currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Demonstrated three (3) years post graduate experience relevant to Emergency Medicine: an aggregate of at least six (6) month experience at a non-junior level
  • Competence in performing all necessary urgent procedures commonly undertaken in Emergency Departments
  • Demonstrated team work, time management, organisations and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of contemporary clinical management and modern approached in assessment and management of the broad range of acute conditions in Emergency Medicine
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and a sensitive approach to clear communication with patients, carers, other professionals and the public
