The Family and Carer Consultants who work within St George Mental Health are highly valued as they assist in ensuring the family and carer network and system is considered throughout the consumer journey. The Family & Carer Consultant is a senior clinician who applies specialist clinical knowledge, experience and skills in building the capacity of the Mental Health Service to respond to, and in providing complex mental health care for, families and carers of a person who experiences a mental illness. Provision of services across the age spectrum as directed by Site Service Director.
The primary focus of this position is to facilitate the development of family and carer sensitive Mental Health Services at the clinical/operational level in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. This position will have responsibility for the promotion of family and carer best practice within the St George Mental Health Service OR Sutherland Mental Health Service OR Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service of SESLHD. This role will utilise a skills enhancement approach to working along-side allied health, nursing and medical staff to promote family/carer focused interventions. The position will support consumer and carer recovery utilising a systemic strengths focused perspective and whole of family approach.
In addition, this role provides information, advocacy, education and clinical interventions to families and carers of mental health consumers and who reside in the Local Health District.
Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.
All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.
Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.

Selection Criteria * Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the Health Professionals (State) Award for Social Work & Occupational Therapy; or qualifications in Psychology with a minimum four year degree with a major in psychology and registration with the Psychologists Board of Australia; or current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with at least five years full time equivalent post registration clinical experience and post graduate qualifications relevant to area of specialty or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the employer and registered with AHPRA.
- Extensive post graduate experience in in mental health including working with families and carers.
- Demonstrated experience in assessment, treatment and management of families of people who have a mental illness in a mental health and community setting, including evidence based family/carer focused interventions.
- Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including clinical services throughout all organisational levels to enhance pathways and transfer between care settings.
- Ability to provide in-depth advice and education to enhance service delivery and to guide and support others in providing service excellence for families and carers, with the capacity to provide clinical supervision to other staff.
- The ability to initiate, lead, complete co-design quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing clinical and professional learning.
- Current unrestricted NSW Drivers Licence and willingness to use same for work purposes.
