ABOUT MACKILLOP FAMILY SERVICES:

At MacKillop, we believe every child deserves the best. And the best place for children is in a safe and supportive family, where they are nurtured to develop to their full potential. We provide high quality services to promote healing from trauma and loss, and to enable hopeful futures.

Our existence as MacKillop Family Services began on 1 July 1997. But our history extends back more than 150 years, when the Sisters of Mercy, Christian Brothers and Sisters of St Joseph began their work in Australia, establishing homes for children who were orphaned, destitute or neglected, and for families in need of care and support. Just like our founders, we are deeply committed to our work and we are driven by social justice.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Multisystemic Therapy Psychiatric (MST-P) is an evidence-based preventive intervention funded by the Department of Health and Human Services under the Family Preservation and Reunification Response (FPRR) to prevent out-of-home placements for some of the most vulnerable and complex children and young people in Victoria.

MST-P is a community-based family driven treatment for young people and families aimed at keeping families together safely.

MST-P therapists work from a strength-based trauma-informed approach and will use the family’s strengths to develop plans that are realistic and long lasting. MST-P therapists also view the family from a community lens and will work to establish meaningful relationships within the family’s natural ecology.

MST-P cases are reviewed weekly by a team of clinicians, their supervisor, our team psychiatrist and a specialised MST-P consultant who is dedicated to ensuring that the highest quality services are delivered and adhere to the MST-P model. MST-P Therapists are part of a team of 2-4 therapists and work intensively with 4 families each for a period of 4 - 6 months in order to be available to families multiple times per week.

The role combines a range of skills and as such it is well-suited to seasoned clinicians with a penchant for field work, or experienced case managers with clinical interest/training. Interested persons may locate information about this treatment model on the internet at .

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA INCLUDE:

The role requires a Bachelors degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling or a related subject area; Extensive experience in family work with highly vulnerable families; Masters degree is preferred. The role will at times require evening and weekend hours plus an on-call roster therefore it is essential that the successful applicant’s life circumstances are sufficiently flexible to undertake this role.

Specific experience in:
  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy and behaviourally-based treatments preferred.
  • Child development research and its application in treatment
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake complex casework with families and children who have experienced trauma
