About the Position
The First Nations Student Support Officer assists in the engagement of indigenous students with the educational and cultural opportunities within the local community and beyond.
The position will strive to:
- provide positive role modelling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- strengthen and celebrate cultural identity
- improve awareness of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages
- strengthen family and community connections
- provide Student Support – individual and group mentoring
- support teachers’ cultural understanding regarding students
About You
The successful applicant will be of First Nation descent.
The VCEA (formally known as CECV) was granted an exemption by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) on the 23 July 2012. VCAT granted that this was the Conduct under a special measure within the meaning of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
The exemption also allows Catholic Schools accessing Indigenous Education funding to advertise positions specifically designated for First Nation people. Exemption number (A103/2012).

- You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to the ethos of Damascus College as a Catholic school in the Mercy tradition.
- Knowledge and understanding of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
- The ability to effectively communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, students, families and carers.
- The ability to effectively communicate with school principals, leadership teams and staff knowledge of and commitment to improving learning outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Child Safe Standards.
