About this exciting opportunity

We are searching for a Technical Officer to join the Territory (NT) coastal and marine ecosystems team who has a commitment to understanding the beautiful and unique NT coastal and marine ecosystems.

As a technician in the Territory (NT) coastal and marine ecosystems team, you will, under the supervision of the Research Scientist Fish Ecologist, , lead and participate in ongoing collaborative projects to improve the understanding of fish population and benthic habitats. You will participate in the development of new projects aligned with the research priorities of NT stakeholders.

You will provide on the job training in survey methods to Indigenous Ranger groups and partner with First Nations people to collect fish population and other ecological data.  

About you

You will have achieved a degree in Marine, Fish Biology, Environmental science or extensive Fish Ecology technical experience. You will have interest in providing technical expertise to increase our knowledge of coastal and marine ecosystems in the NT.  Applicants without specific marine ecology technical experience will be considered for the role if they can demonstrate a willingness to learn, a commitment to increasing our knowledge of the unique benthic ecosystems of the Northern Territory, prior fieldwork experience and data analysis.

You will be able to demonstrate your experience in leading, coordinating, conducting, and improving surveys of marine fish populations, including using video-based survey techniques (e.g., BRUV, DOV, Drop Camera, etc.) and have experience in taxonomic identification of a broad range of fish to species level as well as experience in quantification of marine benthic habitats in marine environments, and experience using video or image annotation software (e.g., ReefCloud, EventMeasure).

  1. Non-Australian Citizens must hold an appropriate Visa with working entitlements that allows paid employment with AIMS for the term of the appointment, depending on the relevant Department of Home Affairs current policies.
  2. It is a requirement of this role that you are and remain fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please note the sighting of proof of vaccination will be required as a pre commencement requirement.
