Garden Design Horticulturist

Gardens for Wildlife Bellingen is a local family-run landscaping and bush regeneration business specialising in native Garden Design that treads lightly on the land. Due to the growth of our business we have an opportunity for a new member to join the team as a Garden Design Horticulturist. The role offers competitive rates and the opportunity to participate in ethical and rewarding work on Gumbaynggirr Country. Whilst this role will require a reasonable level of physical fitness and mobility at times, the role will mostly consist of customer engagement, supplier liaison and design work. Working hours are negotiable and flexible by mutual agreement and will be approximately between 20-40 hours per week depending on the applicant's willingness to work additional hours in a hands-on garden and landscaping role. Pay is based on previous experience and qualifications but will be above Award rates.
The applicant will need their own car, drivers licence and full rights to work in Australia.
This role would only suit someone who is looking for an ongoing long-term position that wants to develop and grow with our company and is planning to stay living locally in the Bellingen or local Gumbaynggirr Country area.
Role responsibilities:
Garden Design - Customer service - Plant Acquisition - High level of Local Native Plant & Weed Knowledge - Nursery Liaison
The ideal candidate filling this position will be responsible for attending when quotes/design meetings with clients occur and liaising with the client during and beyond project completion.
The job will require rapport to be built with client's to help them design their new garden or native regeneration area by exploring which plants will work best (and flourish) for their garden or the regenerating ecosystems needs.
The ideal candidate for this will:
- Hold relevant tertiary qualifications
- Always recommend wildlife friendly native plant species first and discourage any foreign/invasive species (food plants and crops excepted)
- Be able to quickly learn about new plants/weeds/and problem solve issues
- Be able to work closely and collaboratively with other members of the team to bring design ideas to reality
- Demonstrate confidence at working through plant lists with customers to create a formal 'plant list' and agreed costing (after learning our systems and price guides)
- Be able to confidently work with suppliers and nurseries to ensure the best outcome for the customer
- Have an understanding of landscaping materials, styles and techniques.
- Be passionate about preserving existing native flora and have a strong commitment to environmental ethics
- Demonstrate sound knowledge on plant diseases/pests/nutrients/soil and general ongoing plant care
- Educate and train other staff members on native plant species, plant care and planting knowledge
- Have a basic understanding of permaculture principles
- Be computer literate and well organised
- Be able to work safely for themselves and others
