Position Title:            GIS Spatial Analyst

Reports to:                 Operations Manager

This is a new opportunity for the right candidate to join like-minded individuals who are committed to restoring West Australia's unique landscapes and protecting biodiversity.

As the GIS Spatial Analyst, you will play a crucial role in optimizing our rapidly expanding carbon farming projects through spatial data analysis and mapping.

This position will liaise closely with our clients as part of our project delivery team and includes regular travel to remote areas, where working away from home will be required.

We leverage our expertise in bio-diverse native vegetation, project management and access to millions of seedlings to deliver practical offset plantings at scale.

Where you fit in

Nativ Carbon works with companies and organisations who wish to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU's) through vegetation farming in the West Australian Wheatbelt and South West regions.

Nativ Carbon is committed to working with stakeholders to increase carbon sequestration in vegetation to reduce Australia's net carbon emissions.

As GIS Spatial Analyst your expertise and analysis will be crucial in ensuring the successful revegetation of properties with appropriate plantings considering the location, aspect, terrain, soil types and heritage of each project site.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Site Analysis and Planning

  • Utilize GIS software to analyse and interpret spatial data related to vegetation farming, including environmental factors such as location, terrain and soil quality.
  • Consider and incorporate heritage considerations into assessment of project sites.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure GIS insights are integrated into broader environmental strategies. Liaise with stakeholders to gather data and align project goals with local needs.
  • Develop and maintain geospatial databases and mapping applications to support planting plans, as well as ongoing monitoring and management requirements.
  • Collaborate field teams to integrate GIS analysis into decision-making processes for planting, monitoring, and land management.
  • Conduct spatial analysis to identify patterns, trends, and correlations in agricultural data, such as yield variability and pest outbreaks.
  • Generate maps, charts, and reports to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders across the organization.
  • Stay updated on advancements in GIS technology and recommend innovative solutions to improve vegetation farming efficiency and sustainability. Recommend tools and practices that can improve data accuracy and project outcomes.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Foster positive relationships to ensure successful project implementation and alignment with local and global sustainability goals.

Site Selection & Management

  • Conduct thorough desktop assessments to assist in identifying suitable locations for carbon projects.
  • Collection of field data at each project site to feed into mapping database sets.
  • Monitoring & Reporting.
  • Establish robust monitoring systems to track project performance and key performance indicators.
  • Prepare regular reports for internal and external stakeholders, highlighting project achievements and addressing challenges.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Geography, GIS, Agronomy, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in using GIS software to analyse agricultural or environmental datasets.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing techniques and image analysis for vegetation monitoring.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex spatial data and draw actionable insights.
  • Passion for land restoration and a desire to innovate in the field of vegetation farming. 
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within cross-functional teams.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated competence in written and oral communication skills, highly organised with attention to detail and the ability to use Microsoft Office programs in the preparation of reports.

Salary: We believe in rewarding people based on their performance and value to the company. An attractive salary package will be negotiated based on experience and skill set including a company vehicle.

Salary range: $90,000 - $105,000pa pro rata plus superannuation

This is a part time role for 4 days/30 hours per week, with transition to a full-time role considered for the right candidate.  Position will be offered as a 12-month contract initially. A 3-month probationary period is applicable.

Commencement:  Successful candidate to start in May 2024
