Our client owns nearly 1 million acres of northern Australia grazing country a good distance outside of Tennant Creek. Due to a delayed and big wet season, they are in urgent need of an experienced Grader Driver to operate their 14H Cat Grader to fix their station roads, creek crossings, fire breaks and fence lines now that it is dry enough to get around. You will be pivotal to the success of the upcoming muster as roads have to be repaired so that the mustering team and cattle trucks can access all areas of the station. Our client also contracts the machine to the local council and neighbours if needed.
Due to the remoteness of the station, someone with strong mechanical skills who can do running repairs as required would be very highly regarded. Specifically, our client has asked us to find an experienced operator who knows how to work on station roads, bush creek crossings, fence lines & fire breaks.
Duties and responsibilities
- Operator grader in line with manufactures guidelines and in compliance with client and subcontracting client’s OH&S policies
- Undertake all routine and emergency repairs and maintenance as required on the machine
- Be a team player on a remote station, there is no such thing as “not my job” so pitch in do what needs doing.
- Be respectful of all members of the team and station rules.
- Communicate with the client and team members to ensure that everyone knows what is going on.
Skills and Attributes
- Experience operating a similar machine on bush roads – essential
- High level of bush mechanical and fabrication skills – essential
- HC/MC licence – very highly regarded
- High level of “big picture” awareness : If you bust a fence, fix it so that cattle don’t get boxed and need to be re-mustered.
- Water where there shouldn’t be water, mention it to the client as it might be a busted water pipe.
- A heifer in the steer paddock, mention it because it might mean there is a busted fence.
- Tyre tracks, raising smoke, dead animals or anything else out of the ordinary, get on the radio and tell someone
- Communication skills to work well with station owners, family members and other staff
- Take pride in a job well done.
In return, our offers single rooms with shared amenities and all meals provided in an extended team environment. You will all live and work together, although as the Grader Driver most of your days will be spent alone on the machine, returning home each night. Anyone who has experienced this lifestyle knows that good friends are made, good times are had and everyone links arms to get the job done. For the right person, this could be a returning role at the end of next wet season.
Please note this position is not available to Working Holiday Visa Holders.
Due to the large volume of applications we receive, we will only contact shortlisted applicants.
