SMA Australia has a full-time opportunity for a talented Grid Modelling Engineer in our Large-Scale team. The position is hybrid ie, a mix of working from home and working at our North Sydney Head Office or our Brisbane office.
Due to continued business activity in the utility scale solar & storage market, SMA Australia has identified the need for a Grid Modelling Engineer to assist with the engineering and grid connection process in Australia. The role interacts with both SMA local and SMA German colleagues, supporting consultants, developers, and utilities as they undertake Grid Modelling seeking final connection approval, thus helping to facilitate quality sale and connection of SMA Solar and Storage inverters.
About the role:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Managing Key relationship involved with the grid connection process
- Support local Grid Modelling consultants
- Support customers undertaking RMS and EMT Grid Modelling studies and R2 validation
- Maintain and update SMA grid models for distribution within Australia
- Cooperation with SMA Germany to further develop models
- Analyse PSS/e model source code with respect to identified problems in modelling to identify possible solutions
- Prepare site parameters for commissioning based on model performance

About You:
- Tertiary degree in Electrical Engineering- specialising in Control Systems OR Computer Science
- At least 3 years’ Experience in Grid Modelling performance
- Working knowledge of modelling using PSS®E & PSCAD
- Knowledge of the connections process for Generators under the National Electricity Rules (Australia)
- Experience with NER (National Electricity Rules) and GPS (Generator Performance Standards)
- Experience with AEMO model assessment and validation
- Renewable energy industry experience in either Utility scale, Wind or Solar.
- Knowledge/experience using PowerFactory or Matlab
- Analytical and solution oriented
- Urge to learn from on-the-job training
- Willing to work as part of the team.
- Excellent English - the working language is English and it is expected that the job holder is capable of writing e-mails, holding discussions and reading documentation to a business fluent level
