About the organisation

The ANU College of Health and Medicine (CHM) comprises the School of Medicine and Psychology, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH). The Australian National University (ANU) aspires to be the university of choice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars as a place of education, of research and of policy.

The newly established National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Research is uniquely placed to make a significant contribution to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing. Located in the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH), the Centre is well positioned to conduct meaningful and transformative health research that delivers on the priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

About the role

The Head of the National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Research will work across NCEPH, the CHM and the University to provide specialist leadership to develop initiatives that enhance the quality, profile, innovation, and impact of the outcomes of the Centre.

This role will be responsible for academic leadership of the Centre including management, development and quality of the Centre’s teaching, research and student support services. In collaboration with academic and professional staff across the University, the Centre Head will develop and maintain relationships with external partners including relevant organisations in academia, government and industry.

This position will report to the Director, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, College of Health and Medicine.

About you

You are a recognised senior Indigenous representative with strong connections and engagement with Indigenous communities, their Leaders, as well as across a range of stakeholders and sectors related to improving health outcomes for Indigenous communities.

You will be an accomplished senior leader with expertise in health or medicine, or have transferable high level corporate experience, and can provide leadership in Indigenous health research, policy engagement, education, and/or teaching.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Strong connections within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as well as the capacity to communicate respectfully and effectively in a culturally sensitive manner
  2. Demonstrated capacity to develop and manage Centre finances and infrastructure in a changing environment
  3. Capacity for organisational leadership and cultural change, with the ability to enhance the reputation and performance of the Centre on a local, national, and international scale.
  4. Excellent stakeholder engagement skills with an ability to build strong collaborative relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders
  5. Proven experience leading and delivering successful operational management, leadership and strategic direction
  6. Ability to manage and enhance the development and skills of the Centre’s academic and professional staff.
