Job description

Job Description

This role shapes conversations about the public health issues that have the most potential to improve New Zealanders’ wellbeing, with the goal of building a fairer society. Core public health areas to work on are reducing alcohol and tobacco harm, improving Aotearoa’s food environment, and strengthening public health infrastructure.

We are looking for equity champions with backgrounds in media, journalism, communications and advocacy, who can translate health evidence into compelling stories that improve public health.

Successful applicants will have a history of working with self-awareness and sensitivity with people from diverse backgrounds and communities. An understanding of the policy process and machinery of Government and the public sector is an advantage.

You will approach the issues through an evidence-based lens which values health equity and seeks better outcomes for Māori in particular, as well as other groups who do not have equal health outcomes in Aotearoa, such as lower-income communities and Pacific peoples.

You will get a high level of creative input into the direction of your work, often working independently, and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders and leaders in public and community health in Aotearoa.

Key outputs include; media releases, briefings and pitches; messaging and framing advice, media and communications training for spokespeople; communications strategy building and implementation; researching new stories, analysing data, and publicising the evidence on public health.

Shared office space is available in Wellington, working from home is also possible. Auckland candidates can be considered, as well as remote candidates with the ability to regularly travel.

Flexible hours available, and both full-time (40 hours) and part-time pro-rata applications are welcome. Work outside office hours required occasionally.

Fixed-term 2 year contract due to external funding agreement.
