Who we are
NORSTA Maritime is the Regional Maintenance Provider for both the North (Darwin) and North-East (Cairns, Head Office), delivering project management capabilities, technical expertise and quality assurance activities for the Royal Australian Navy fleet.

Our advanced maritime sustainment planning coordinates fleet maintenance at scale across Far North Queensland, including Northern Australia and adjacent waters for the Commonwealth of Australia. 

Due to demand for our services, we are expanding rapidly and developing further capacity for more vessel platforms.  

About the role
As Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Officer at NORSTA Maritime, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, security, and health of our maritime operations across multiple onsite locations, including shipyards. Your responsibilities will encompass providing expert support and advice in the HSE space, conducting site inspections, mitigating WHS issues, and coordinating HSE initiatives. Key Responsibilities:

  • Organize and facilitate on-site work health safety compliance training and inductions.
  • Conduct site audits, inspections, and task inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Undertake hazards reporting, promptly identifying and addressing potential risks.
  • Plan, review, and assess all related NORSTA activities to ensure compliance with legislative and government requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of an Integrated Management System encompassing health, safety, environment, and security policies, procedures, plans, and work instructions.
  • Review and provide advice on safety improvement plans, coordinating their development.
  • Monitor on-site work processes and procedures, conducting investigations to identify unsafe practices or breaches of safety regulations. Report all potential hazards and risks through risk assessments.
  • Deliver safety reports, audit findings, inspection findings, and incident reports, ensuring all hazards, near misses, and non-conformances are accurately reported.
  • Provide strong administrative support, including the development of appropriate policies, procedures, and work instructions related to HSES requirements.
  • Undertake Security Officer duties as required.
  • Assist in the management of DISP membership requirements.

NOTE: As a condition of this role, you must be able to obtain (and hold) Baseline Defence security clearance, which requires Australian Citizenship. A National Police Check will also be undertaken. 

About you
You are a dedicated and experienced professional with an expert knowledge and understanding of WHS principles and frameworks, including work health and safety legislation and codes. Your demonstrated experience in providing strategic planning, review, and assessment of WHS practices ensures compliance with legislative and government requirements. With a background in operations in different environments, you have the ability to apply procedures to the site environment effectively. Your high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and collaboration software like SharePoint, coupled with your strong IT skills, sets you apart. You may be looking to leverage your well-honed professional skillset to another professional environment where collaboration and team-work is important. 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum Diploma in Occupational in Health & Safety 
  • Construction White Card 
  • Work In Confined Spaces Certificate
  • Working at Heights Certificate
  • First Aid Certificate
