Primary objective
Provide tenancy management and client services to clients of the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities, in
accordance with the Residential Tenancies Act and Housing Act, and advice and information to the public on matters relating to public
housing programs (both urban and remote) in accordance with legislation and Departmental policies and procedures.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage a caseload of public housing tenancies to ensure all obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act and Housing Act are met,
including managing tenancy agreements, minimising debt, addressing anti-social behaviour and inspecting dwellings.
2. Assist clients to achieve successful tenancies through liaison with, and referrals to, appropriate support services.
3. Prepare accurate and timely information as required for briefing documents.
4. Undertake property inspections to ensure tenant compliance and to identify essential maintenance works required to appropriately
maintain the asset.
5. Provide a timely, and culturally appropriate frontline service within a multidisciplinary framework.
6. Maintain accurate records on the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities computer systems ie. Tenancy
Management System (TMS) and TRIM.
7. Respond positively to change with a commitment to ongoing improvement and professional development, as well as act professionally
at all times, demonstrate cultural awareness and operate within the boundaries of agreed policies and procedures.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience in providing a high standard of service in a housing or similar organisation, within a regulatory environment,
which has a culturally diverse client base.
2. Demonstrated listening, written and verbal communication skills, including ability to develop relationships and negotiate effectively
and sensitively with people who do not speak English as their first language.
3. Demonstrated ability to understand and apply policy and legislation from a Departmental perspective and provide appropriate advice
to staff and clients.
4. Proven high level organisational skills, including demonstrated ability to work on agreed priorities, complete tasks and maintain
accurate records and files.
5. Demonstrated ability to work independently, often with limited supervision, as a member of a team, and ability to supervise a small
team.
6. Proven skills in the use of information technology systems, including email, word, spreadsheets and mainframe systems such as
Tenancy Management System (TMS) or similar.
7. A current NT C class Drivers Licence or equivalent, physically able to drive 4x4 vehicles for long distances and travel by various means
including commercial and light aircraft if required.
Desirable
1. Working knowledge of functions, policies and regulatory controls within the public housing sector, including the Housing Act and
Residential Tenancies Act.

The Housing Officer, whilst based in Nhulunbuy, may be required to travel to Remote communities.
