Position Title: Housing Officer Carpenter/Trainer
Reporting to: Infrastructure Manager
Location: Wurrumiyanga, Bathurst Island
Grade: LGIA Level 10 - 11
Status: Full Time
The Tiwi islands are located 80km north of Darwin in the beautiful Arafura Sea. There are two islands, Bathurst and Melville with a total land mass of 8320sq km. The islands are home to the Tiwi people, who have a strong affiliation with their land, a distinctive culture and language. There are school and medical facilities on the islands, with regular plane, passenger ferry and barge services operation to Darwin.
OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION
The Housing Officer Carpenter/Trainer will carry out hands on repairs and maintenance to all regional Council infrastructures, monitor inventory and provide services to external customers under external contracts when required and other tasks as directed. The Officer will provide effective leadership and training to Tiwi apprentices if required. The Officer will be required to travel between all the communities across both islands to complete works when required.
Selection Criteria - Essential
Carpentry trade qualification to work in Northern Territory. Must have a Trade Certificate & Cert III or IV TAE
Proven ability to implement repair and maintenance programs
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
Proven ability to motivate, work with and lead apprentices.
Ability in stock/material management.
Ability to work independently and with small teams.
Well developed written and oral communication skills.
Experience in working in a cross cultural environment and ability to communicate sensitively with Aboriginal people
Accepted to live on the Tiwi Islands and available to travel to and work in other remote communities.
Current Australian Drivers License.
Desirable
Ability to work with steel
Construction White Card
Certification/licences in machinery e.g. bobcat, fork lift
