About the Role:

We have a new opportunity for a Superintendent - HSET to join our BUMA Australia Zero Harm Site Leadership team at our Commodore mine to enable the company's Zero Harm goals and objectives to be met. Reporting to the Site Project Manager, the Superintendent - HSET will assist in coordinating the development, implementation and review of the Zero Harm management system and assist with preparation of company policies and procedures with regard to Zero Harm matters. The other primary objectives of the role are:
  • Provide advice and assistance to all employees, but particularly senior and middle management, in the development of a safe and healthy workplace
  • Ensure project Zero Harm plans are continually reviewed and maintained
  • Monitor site-based crisis management and emergency response systems
  • Maintain records using Integrated Management System (IMS) and Project Management Plans (PMP)
  • Research and develop Zero Harm initiatives to resolve problem areas and develop a process of continuous improvement
  • Monitor and provide advice to management on Zero Harm legislative and compliance obligations
  • Review the business unit's standard working/operating procedures for currency and accuracy and advise function owners accordingly
  • Administer accident/incident information in the company database
  • Analyse, review and report on accident/incident information
  • Oversee the workers' compensation and rehabilitation system for all sites
  • Promote the company's Zero Harm policy by creating a learning environment that embraces the principles of involvement and participation by all employees
  • Coordinate the circulation of regular information bulletins, safety alerts, newsletters and feedback
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies in accordance with Australian Standard 4360
  • Attend BUMA Zero Harm Meetings as required
  • Work closely with clients, Federal and State entities and industry bodies to promote the BUMA Australia Zero Harm strategy
  • Promote compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements
  • Support management teams in incident investigation and root cause analysis as required (ICAM)
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of Dangerous Goods and compliance
  • Liaise with key stakeholders (engineers, plant/site managers, government regulators) to ensure knowledge and compliance with legislation
You will maintain close and collaborative working relationships with BUMA Site Leadership, Project Managers and Site department leaders to identify site needs and ensure the effective implementation of Health & Safety programs. You will also be responsible for developing and mentoring Health & Safety professionals and working with Learning & Development to implement safety promotions and training material. You will also maintain a good working relationship with the regulator.

You will be responsible for ensuring the Health, Safety and Training Project Systems are compliant with legislation and standards. You will also support sites through Significant Incident Investigation and reporting and sharing relevant information to sites through a monthly Significant Incident forum and other means of communication.

About You:
  • Tertiary qualifications in a health and safety discipline - degree or diploma in OH&S, education, or a relevant science related discipline
  • Current drivers' licence
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience working in the mining industry, including experience working with explosives or in the explosives industry
  • Competent computer user with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work with remote teams and varied stakeholders
  • Risk management including Critical risk implementation
  • Knowledge and application of current mental health strategies
  • Knowledge of the mining industry's regulations and legislation relating to health and safety would be well regarded
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to negotiate and liaise with site personnel.
  • Good rapport building skills with site-based leaders and workforce
