About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and tenacious Investigative Reporter to deliver exclusive, engaging content using innovative storytelling techniques. Using your range of diverse contacts, sources, you will break news across platforms with your investigative skills and experience.

You will work with the newsroom leadership team to:
  • Generate exclusive TAS stories utilising a wide network of contacts, trusted sources, research, and data techniques.
  • With limited direction write concise and accurate copy and scripts, using creative storytelling techniques.
  • Demonstrate advanced media production and presentation skills.
  • Work collaboratively with the In-Depth producer, sharing experience and knowledge across the wider TAS News team.
  • Play an active role planning and executing cross-format projects with ABC Regional & Local teams in TAS.
  • Exhibit high-level communication skills. Take direction and offer guidance and leadership.
  • Identify and manage editorial risks, working closely with news leaders and ABC Legal to manage those accordingly.
About You

You will have strong experience as an investigative reporter in a digital environment. You have a reputation for breaking exclusive stories that have impact and hold all levels of government to account.
  • Proven ability to identify key talent and convince sources and contacts to participate in stories is a must.
  • Advanced capability to write clear, concise copy, exercising considerable independent editorial judgement.
  • Ability to deliver complex issues in a way that both engages and informs audiences across a range of broadcast, digital and social platforms. A strong understanding of how audience insights and analytics can inform innovative storytelling is a distinct advantage.
  • Demonstrated high-level communications skills, with an ability to work individually or as part of a wider investigative team. Proven experience collaborating with subject experts such as data journalists, together with a wider production team.
  • Experience and advanced ability with a variety of production techniques, including long-form digital and interactive presentations. Ability to quickly absorb training in video production, presentation and graphics.
  • Ability to manage a range of stakeholder relationships, including collaborations with other ABC News, Analysis & Investigations units and Regional & Local units across TAS.
  • Demonstrated ability to share knowledge and train and mentor junior staff in investigative journalism techniques. Excellent time management skills.
