About the Role:
Join our SAES Recovery Volunteer Team
We invite skilled, experienced and willing people from people facing professional or voluntary backgrounds to join our Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) recovery volunteer team.
The Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) department has trained disaster Recovery Teams who provide immediate assistance and meet people at their point of need following a disaster.
Disaster recovery is a coordinated process that involves all Salvation Army services working together to provide assistance to individuals and communities that meets them at their point of need, throughout the journey of recovery.
This assistance can include financial assistance, material aid, personal support, Chaplaincy services, financial counselling and casework.
When the peak of the disaster is over, our Recovery teams step in to provide our services in support of the medium and long term needs of the community.
Who can apply
Recovery volunteers can come from outside of The Salvation Army (TSA) or from within The Salvation Army. Whether you are already a part of TSA or come to us externally, the main thing we look for is your experience or ability to work with people who have experienced trauma and may well be under a great deal of stress. Computer skills are highly regarded as well.
Potential SAES volunteers from within TSA can be Salvation Army Officers, Employees, Retired Officers, current Volunteers in other areas of TSA operations, or Corps Members. If you are an internal staff applicant, it is essential that volunteer applications are endorsed by either your line manager, DC / HOD / AO or Corps Officer if you are looking to make yourself available during your normal work hours. You can take up to 5 days Workplace Program Support paid leave with your managers approval.
Volunteers Duties
Volunteer duties can vary depending on the disaster or crisis response, but can include:
Distributing material aid to disaster-affected people
Providing holistic support to people and communities impacted by disaster, experiencing trauma or distress
Assisting with admin remotely or in a recovery centre
Assisting with operations and volunteer coordination
Providing outreach services to disaster affected people either face to face or over the phone.
Assisting with our disaster assessment call centre
Volunteer Roles
The various duties are carried out within one of the following 3 key roles:
Recovery Team Member
Provides support to community members in disaster-affected areas from a trauma-informed care approach. This will involve assessing the needs of individuals and offering assistance in accordance with SAES guidelines, and the values and mission of The Salvation Army. This position is suited to someone who has good listening and communication skills, and is committed to providing care, sensitivity and empathy when corresponding with people.
Recovery Admin Support
Provides support to the team by ensure data is correctly and accurately recorded, filing and maintaining the confidentiality of paperwork and contributing to the overall delivery of services to community. This role is ideally suited to people that prefer to work behind the scenes and have existing knowledge of SAMIS.
Recovery Team Leader
Involves coordinating and leading a local Recovery Team that is supporting a disaster-affected community. This will include liaising with The SAES Team as well as other government and non-government agencies assisting in the community. This position is suited to someone who has experience managing people and teams, and is confident in leading and coordinating daily team activities, new member inductions and debriefs within a disaster response.
Requirements

Ability to attend training
Availability to travel and/or undertake multiple day deployments.
