Job description

The Role

A very exciting opportunity to join a brand new up and coming Family Law firm.

Our brand new boutique Family Law and Wills and Estates practice requires an Junior Lawyer (or possibly a Graduate Lawyer in the right circumstances) for initially for a permanent part time role (0.6 to 0.7 FTE), with some flexibility to work from home or remotely 1 day per week. It is envisaged the role will become a full time position by July 2023.

You will be working under a very experienced practitioner who has previously worked for top tier firms in Adelaide and Melbourne and has ran a separate private practice (3 lawyer firm) for over 14 years. However, due to professional circumstances, our principal is presently limited in his workload and therefore the successful candidate must be capable of self motivation and independent learning and workload management. That being said, our principal is able to deliver daily mentoring, guidance, supervision and support.

Our ambitions for our firm are high - we are certain this firm will become a pillar of the Family Law community in the coming years, and therefore there is an opportunity to grow into the role, and progress quickly in seniority. Once you become aware of the strength of our brand, you will understand our optimism.

Your must be:

Hardworking, flexible, down to earth and willing to do what it takes to ensure your clients are successful - merely achieving the minimum will not do.

You will immediately become a integral part of this firm, and with the right work ethic and abilities, including a willingness to learn and work hard at improving your professional skills as your experience increases, will be promoted provided your experience and skills improve as expected. Do not expect a team of support staff - boutique firms do not work like that. You must be willing to answer the switchboard, call clients, explain outcomes and write your own correspondence. All of these things will ensure you are not only valuable to the firm, but sufficiently well rounded and confident to develop your own client base and referral network over time.

You can expect a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Client intake sessions (phone / in person)
  • Court attendances (with or without counsel)
  • Liaising with clients via email and telephone
  • Diary Management
  • Drafting legal documents and correspondence
  • Briefing Counsel
  • Attending to client enquiries
  • Filing and other administrative duties including exemplary telephone skills

About You:

  • Prior legal experience in family law and wills and estates (or, if your are a graduate, a strong academic record together with sufficient clerking / volunteer experience)
  • Hard work ethic and while being relatable and down to earth are absolutely essential
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills across the Microsoft suite, in particular Word and PowerPoint, a working knowledge of Excel and a typing speed of 45+ wpm
  • Experience using document management and billing/time recording systems or sufficient other experience to learn quickly
  • The ability to be flexible, adaptable and proactive, and be able to work unsupervised
  • A positive attitude and team player approach, no matter what the task
  • Strong organisational and file management skills and initiative - if your disorganised, this role is not for you.
