About the role
As a wave of digital technologies find application within the rail industry, new generation operational technology has a critical role to play in rapid and robust transmission of data vital to keeping train crew and the general public safe while optimising assets and maintenance processes, enabling edge analytics and providing real-time communications to enable increasing levels of automation. At Pacific National, our Operational Technology (OT) Engineers have a critical role to play in the control, efficient performance, and maintenance of systems to create the smart trains and infrastructure of the future.
Reporting to the OT Engineering Lead, this role is part of a team of forward-thinking specialist engineers accountable to specify, commission and maintain all operational systems that improve the safety, efficiency and performance of the Pacific National (PN) business. With digital transformation forcing the merger of the OT and IT networks within PN to improve safety and efficiency and to gain competitive advantage, there is an opportunity for a Junior OT Engineer to join the team focused on building the digital railroad for Pacific National.
Key responsibilities include:
- Management and application of new and legacy operational technologies
- Identify appropriate operational technologies and manage the selection process
- Develop and deliver safe, reliable, available and maintainable operational systems
- Stakeholder engagement, requirements management, verification/validation and configuration management
About you
To make your mark in this career building role, you will have a Bachelor of Engineering behind you, ideally in one of the following specialisations - Avionics, Communications/Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics or Robotics or a related field.
You will also have the following skills, knowledge, experience and attributes:
- Passion for technology, willingness to learn rail operational systems and an interest in transport, logistics and engineering
- An interest in Telecommunications, Critical Safety Systems, Train Control or Condition Monitoring
- A passion for operational systems design and implementation (hardware/software)
- Any experience in project management, negotiation and/or market research will be highly regarded
- An eagerness to learn the principles of systems engineering through specifying, commissioning, and maintaining systems that improve the safety and efficiency of operations
- Good analytical skills and critical attention to specification details
- Excellent soft skills including communication, interpersonal, presentation, leadership and report writing proficiency with a strong desire and ability to collaborate in problem solving in an integrated team environment with internal teams, vendors, partners and customers.
