Company Overview: Sydney By Kayak is an Award Winning, Ecotourism Certified Kayak Tour Operator in Sydney, dedicated to providing unforgettable experiences on Sydney Harbour. We specialise in Sunrise Kayak and Coffee tours, offering bucket list experiences through breathtaking, iconic waterways, as well as Eco tours, exploring diverse ecosystems. Our team is passionate about sharing our love for kayaking and conservation with our paddlers, ensuring they leave with unforgettable memories, incredible photos and a deeper appreciation for sustainability.

Position Overview: As a Kayak GuideTeam Leader and Head Trainer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering exceptional kayak tours, while recruiting, leading and mentoring a team of Kayak Guides. You will be responsible for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our guests, while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and environmental stewardship. This position requires strong leadership skills, extensive kayaking experience, excellent communication, and a passion for being on the water. Responsibilities:

  1. Assist SBK owners with recruiting and growing an exceptional team of Guides and Instructors, joining the existing team members, ready for peak season 2024 and beyond!
  2. Lead and inspire SBK's team of Kayak Guides, providing training, support, and guidance to ensure exceptional guest experiences and a safe and fun working environment. This includes, but is not limited to, kayak skills training, photography, storytelling and customer service training. 
  3. Conduct pre-tour briefings and safety demonstrations for guests, highlighting the importance of safety protocols and environmental conservation.
  4. Plan and lead kayak tours, showcasing the natural beauty and iconic history of the area and cater to the skill levels and interests of the paddling group.
  5. Provide expert instruction on kayaking techniques, safety procedures, and environmental awareness to guests and team members.
  6. Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, including kayaks, paddles, life jackets, vans and safety gear, conducting regular inspections and repairs as needed.
  7. Monitor weather and water conditions, making informed decisions to ensure the safety of guests and staff.
  8. Handle face-to-face guest inquiries at the boat ramp, assisting in a professional and timely manner, striving to exceed expectations and resolve issues effectively.
  9. Foster a positive and inclusive team environment, promoting teamwork, collaboration, and mutual respect among team members.
  10. Uphold company policies and procedures, including those related to safety, customer service, and environmental sustainability.
  11. Continuously seek opportunities for personal and professional development, staying updated on industry trends, best practices, and safety regulations.

Qualifications and skills:

  1. Proven experience as a Kayak Guide and Instructor, with a strong understanding of kayak techniques and safety procedures.
  2. Previous leadership or supervisory experience, demonstrating the ability to lead and motivate a team effectively.
  3. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and confidently to guests and team members.
  4. Current certifications in first aid and CPR 
  5. Must be a qualified Kayak Instructor.
  6. Strong decision-making abilities, with the capacity to assess risks and make informed decisions in dynamic outdoor environments.
  7. Must be a morning person with a warm and welcoming personality. This is important when dealing with both Guides and customers.
  8. Passion for water sports and environmental conservation, with a genuine desire to share this passion with others.
  9. Physical fitness and stamina to handle the demands of leading kayak tours in varying weather and water conditions, as well as lifting the kayaks in and out of the kayak vans each morning. 
  10. Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including weekends and holidays, based on tour schedules and peak times.
