The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific and technological activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental, observational or technology development work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work.

The Sustainable Carbon Technologies (SCT) Group is currently undergoing expansion with 8 new research staff and strategic, co-funded and externally funded projects valued at over $15 million over the next 5 years. These are all primarily experimentally based projects that will take place at the Newcastle site.

This work will be carried out across 8 laboratories and 2 process bays at the Newcastle site. The role of the Laboratory and Facility Support Officer will be to assist the SCT Group in the setup, management, maintenance and operation of these facilities.

Your duties will include:
  • Assist staff in maintaining good housekeeping and up-to-date chemical manifests in laboratory and process bay areas.
  • Assist staff in the safe procurement, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals and equipment.
  • Assist staff in the loading/unloading and movement around the site of gas bottles and large equipment.
  • Assist staff in the design and setup of new experimental equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment to keep it in good working order (e.g. replacement of desiccant, changing vacuum pump oil, changing of electrode storage solutions, testing and calibration, coordination of regular equipment service and repair with equipment providers, etc.).
  • Ensure stocks of consumables such as paper towel, gloves, safety glasses, labels, etc., are maintained.
  • Under limited supervision, design and perform straightforward experiments and routine laboratory analyses, design new processes or apparatus by adapting existing techniques and components to meet special circumstances or undertake modifications to methods requiring some innovation.
  • Work with discretion to decide on the timing of operations within the work team's plan and plan ahead to meet experimental and/or project demands.
  • Oversee the activities of less experienced staff and provide guidance on experimental/ technological techniques and protocols as required.
  • Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO's reputation.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO's scientific objectives.
  • Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO's Values, Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.
  • Other duties as directed.

To be considered you will need:

Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
  • Relevant trade certificate/diploma/bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience in chemistry and/or laboratory management and procedures.
  • Experience working in and/or managing a laboratory in which hazardous chemicals and compressed gases are used.
  • Experience with risk assessment and risk mitigation procedures in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in the setup and maintenance of scientific equipment such as gas chromatographs, spectrometers and titration equipment.
  • A current drivers license.
Desirable
  • A current forklift license or willingness to obtain one.
