About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology are looking for a Laboratory Coordinator to join the team at Prince of Wales Hospital on a Temporary Full Time basis.

The Virology Research Laboratory (VRL) is part of the Virology Division at the South Eastern Area Laboratory Services (SEALS) at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick. This research group emerged due to a need to integrate important discoveries related to inflammation and immunity of infectious disease, with the urgent need to improve treatment, diagnosis and prevention of infections with hepatitis C virus, cytomegalovirus, enterovirus, respiratory viruses such as influenza, and other viruses.

What you'll be doing

The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for the day to day running of the Virology Research Laboratory (VRL) including providing effective laboratory support for business management, human resource management, financial management, and making optimal use of resources maintenance. The position includes having a strong focus on financial responsibilities and general administration. The lab coordinator is responsible for regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services, Health & Safety matters and provide support to postdoctoral researchers and students at the VRL. The position also requires to maintain effective relationships with internals departments of Pathology, the hospital, UNSW and external research partners.

  • Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Demonstrated understanding of medical research in a relevant discipline including extensive managerial and operational experience within a large complex organisation or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrable experience in all aspects of laboratory administration and management including financial and HR management skills and experience.
  • Proven familiarity with required external accreditation and certification standards and demonstrable experience in attaining these standards. These include PC2 certification & OGTR accreditation.
  • Extensive experience in personnel management including staff supervision, training, recruitment, and performance.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders and interact professionally with a diverse range of people at all levels.
  • Demonstrated high level organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines with proven ability to work both independently and in a team situation.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases

This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.



Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
