Laboratory Technician Pool

  • This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of Western Australia’s frontline in detecting animal and/or plant diseases.
  • Work amongst a diverse group of Laboratory Technicians/Scientists and Veterinary Pathologists in DPIRD’s Diagnostics and Laboratory Services (DDLS) team.
We are seeking to establish a pool of suitably qualified applicants for the role of Laboratory Technician. DDLS is a multidisciplinary laboratory that includes veterinary pathology, plant pathology and entomology.

What will your typical day look like?

Your day-to-day work will consist of scientific activities in a laboratory where you will assist with diagnostics and reporting on animal diseases. It will involve the handling and processing of animal samples as well as the recording and tabulating of results for diagnostics, research, and survey work. This includes assisting veterinary pathologists in performing autopsies of both terrestrial and aquatic animals for histopathology processing and diagnostic sample selection.

We are looking for proactive Laboratory Technicians with relevant experience and qualifications, who will be capable of working effectively as part of a laboratory team whilst maintaining attention to detail when completing tasks. To be successful in this role you will demonstrate willingness to work on diverse projects while also contributing to the general maintenance of laboratory equipment, consumables, and work areas.

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible for a permanent appointment to the Western Australian public sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia. To be eligible for a fixed term or a casual appointment you must have documentary evidence of your entitlement to live and work in Australia for the period as part of your application.

You will be required to provide a current National Police Certificate (police clearance) before commencing employment. If not currently held, this must be acquired prior to commencement at applicant’s expense.

Special Requirements for this position:
  • Certificate in a relevant discipline with some relevant experience.
  • A current and valid Western Australia C (car) class driver’s license, or equivalent is required (if not currently held, must be acquired prior to commencement at applicant’s expense).
  • Occasional travel to and from metropolitan and regional offices may be required.
This pool will be valid for a period of twelve (12) months following finalisation of the process and may be used to fill permanent and fixed term, full time and part time in other locations such as Hillarys, Waterman’s or external sites around the state. Please note, being appointed to the pool does not guarantee you placement to a position.
