About the role

Based in Brisbane or Adelaide Office and reporting to the Environment Manager (Corporate), this position is responsible for the delivery of Santos’ strategic policy and advocacy work activities and project assurance program across the Environment, Access, and Approval disciplines for our schedule of major projects and international operations, including emerging energy projects. As an environmental governance and assurance lead within the company, this role will provide leadership and direction in problem solving and identifying opportunities for improvement in performance in relation to environmental discipline matters including approvals, operations, and decommissioning activities. 

Accountabilities are delivered in line with the Santos Management System (SMS), Santos Delegation of Authority (DOA) and Corporate Governance and Safety requirements. Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Providing strategic and technical advice on environmental approvals, stakeholder engagement and compliance, driving best practice performance across the full life cycle of activities through identifying strategic risks and assisting to develop mitigation and management approaches and programs to respond.  
  • Identifying legislative, policy and approval risks and, working with project teams, develop and deliver solutions to support Santos’ future development goals across traditional oil and gas projects, decarbonisation, clean fuels and new energy projects.
  • Developing and maintaining strategic, collaborative relationships with regulators and external stakeholders, industry bodies and other operators in relation to environment and approval related matters.
  • Representing the Environment Function in cross technical performance reviews, project briefings, risk assessment workshops and management meetings across the business, including both onshore and offshore Australian assets as well as Papua New Guinea and Alaska.
  • Conducting field-based audits and assessments of environmental performance to ascertain and report on the level of environmental compliance with the Management Standards, regulatory approvals and management plans. 
  • Taking a lead role on engaging with internal and external stakeholders to undertake legislation and policy reviews and preparation of responses.  
  • Supporting multidisciplinary teams to successfully achieve work programs and deliver on Company targets within a high performing EHS culture. 
  • Reviewing and advising on strategies for environmental and access related approvals, environmental programs and reports and compliance matters.
  • Formulating and delivering Santos’ corporate functional plans aimed at minimising and managing group-wide environmental impacts.
  • Managing and overseeing the delivery of field surveys and impact assessments to support Santos’ future development goals.
  • Reporting on compliance of the business with approval and internal management standards. Deliver internal and external reporting on impact tracking and the delivery of environmental approvals and improvement initiatives.

About you

You will be experienced in:

  • Strategic and advisory environmental management roles, preferably within the oil and gas or resources industry for at least 15 years
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in environmental science/management, or a related field and/or relevant work/industry experience in provision of environmental services to the Oil and Gas or resources sector
  • Leading environmental approval and/or environmental operational management strategies as a manager or technical specialist 
  • Legislative and policy review processes with proven ability to influence and in a range of operating environments
  • Expert knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, policies and processes related to environmental management relevant to petroleum or resources operations
  • Strong working knowledge of environmental impact assessment frameworks and concepts as well as experience in delivering complex environmental approvals within Australia
  • High level written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders and influence outcomes.
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to undertake site visits to field locations
