  • Salary Package: Part-time pro-rata equivalent $115,787 - $136,995 (Level B) or from $141,376 - $162,584 (Level C), plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Appointment Type: Part-time, continuing position 0.5 Fulltime equivalent, Teaching and Research Academic
  • Location: Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

The Role
Ethics is a critical area of teaching and learning within the degree programs at the Macquarie Medical School. Ethical understanding and conduct are a cornerstone for graduate outcomes for our programs as part of the Australian Medical Council accreditation standards. We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced academic with expertise to teach medical and health ethics primarily within our Doctor of Medicine and Bachelor of Clinical Science programs, and to develop and/or continue a program of research in medical ethics.

About You
Possessing a PhD in Philosophy or other relevant area and demonstrated success in the development and delivery of Ethics teaching and learning preferably within medical and clinical health programs, you will utilise your experience and capacity to design and deliver units and programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will have experience with, or a willingness to embrace, educational technology, blended learning and educational innovation. You will also have a track record of research in medical ethics, as demonstrated by publications and capacity to obtain research funding.

Essential criteria

  • A PhD in Philosophy or a relevant area with demonstrated success in the development and delivery of Ethics teaching and learning preferably within medical and clinical health programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a high-quality ethics curriculum, including the design, delivery, and management of online and face-to-face content, lectures, tutorials, and assessments, with evidence of excellent student outcomes and reflective practice.
  • Evidence of digital innovation in pedagogy and teaching practice, including assessments and curriculum development, working collaboratively with other academics and colleagues to design and deliver ethics units.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake research about ethical and/or philosophical issues raised by healthcare.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to relate, to build an inclusive teaching and learning environment, and to work effectively in a team environment.
  • High level of organisation and time management.
  • Ability and willingness to evaluate and critically reflect upon own professional practice, and continue professional learning, including contributing to the broader university community
  • This position includes teaching responsibilities in Semester 3, and the successful candidate must be available for coordination and teaching of a unit of study over December/January each year (excluding the recess from 25December to 1January).
  • Experience in teaching Professional Practice skills (e.g.; communication, teamwork, reflection) is desirable.

For a Level C appointment, all of the above and the following:

  • Demonstrated excellence in delivering a high-quality medical and ethics-based curriculum, including the design, delivery, and management of online and face-to-face content, lectures, tutorials, and assessments, with evidence of excellent student outcomes and reflective practice.
  • Demonstrated research success and expertise in Ethics demonstrated through high-quality publications.
  • Demonstrated leadership of innovation in pedagogy and teaching practice, including assessments and curriculum development, working collaboratively with other academics and colleagues to design and deliver ethics units.
  • Evidence of an educational philosophy that caters to diverse student cohorts, creating a superior student experience, characterised by strong engagement at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Demonstrated contribution to the academic life and administrative tasks of the Department and Faculty, along with a track record of effective leadership and teamwork.

This position requires you to comply with occupational screening, assessment and vaccinations in line with Macquarie University health requirements. You may also have to satisfy Macquarie University that you meet all background checks (including criminal record and qualification checks).
