The Payments Service Utility (PSU) brings together the process, people and technology assets supporting cheques, bulk electronic payments, merchant acquiring (including terminal technology), high value and international payments processing for CBA. The team have the monumental task of ensuring that 40% of the Australian economy are able to transact over $90 billion a day using the Bank’s services in a reliable manner. With the payments technology systems being at the heart of the Bank, almost every customer-facing channel relies on payments services in one way or another.

As Mainframe Software Engineering Chapter Lead, Merchant Technology, you will be responsible for leading a team of mainframe software engineers responsible for ongoing change and development of the bank’s highest volume retail transaction switch. You will foster an environment of engineering excellence and a culture of ongoing improvement.

You will be part of the PSU Merchants Technology Software Engineering Chapter Area. The team is led by the Executive Manager Merchants Technology Engineering who is accountable for the engineering capabilities that support the Merchants and Retail Payments functions at CBA.

The team works to deliver exceptional outcomes for our business stakeholders and customers.

Do work that matters

The Mainframe Software Engineering Chapter Lead is an Engineering Manager level role and will report into the Executive Manager, Merchants Technology Engineering. In this role, you will:
  • Build, lead and inspire a team of engaged engineers
  • Support the team by removing impediments and assisting with technical solutions
  • Provide coaching and establish peer-to-peer learning and mentoring
  • Demonstrate commitment to fostering and leading diverse teams
  • Role model a culture of engineering empowerment, autonomy, psychological safety and constructive challenge
  • Understand the unique skillsets of team members, and provide personalised feedback and guidance
  • Communicate with senior management and stakeholders to ensure a clear path to execution
  • Develop and communicate engineering practice standards and consistent ways of working across the domain, in alignment with CBA standards and industry best practice
  • Allocate the team’s time to support effective code review, continuous improvement and removal of technical debt.
  • Provide your knowledge, expertise and experience to uplift and improve mainframe development practices
We’re interested in hearing from people who have:
  • A strong and extensive background in IBM mainframe engineering, covering both development and system operations
  • A deep understanding of mainframe technology, capabilities, concepts and features
  • Mastery of mainframe development technologies and tools: COBOL, zASM, CICS, Intertest, Endevor, Rexx, VSAM, MQ, EzTrieve, IAM, VSAM, RACF, Control-M, Control-D, JCL
  • Knowledge of modern development methodologies and processes, covering DevOps tooling and approaches, and how they can be applied to mainframe environments
  • Experience managing medium-to-large sized teams of engineers with a mix of onshore/offshore
  • A team-focused mindset, and a desire to build an exciting and engaging engineering culture in the mainframe space
