The Opportunity
Based in Perth Western Australia, Schlam Payload Asia-Pacific makes mining equipment more productive. Our range of dump bodies and mining attachments are customised to deliver payload, maintenance, safety and fuel saving benefits for leading mining companies the world over. 

Our team of technical experts collaborate closely with our customers to address site-specific variables and challenges. Every mine site is different. That is why we design and engineer our products individually and cater our services to best suit the needs of our customers.

Reporting to the General Manager – Manufacturing, this role will drive continuous improvement initiatives and focus on enhancing our manufacturing operations across a diverse range of steel product manufacturing activities. This newly created role is critical to the success of both our Forrestfield and Waroona Workshops. 

As Manufacturing Engineer/Specialist, you will have a deep understanding of best-in-class manufacturing processes, heavy steel fabrication processes, quality control standards, and be a champion of lean manufacturing principles and technologies to optimise manufacturing methods.

Any given day will see you collaborating with stakeholders and guiding teams on workforce planning, manufacturing process analysis, addressing and resolving manufacturing and technical issues, and developing improved tooling and production methodologies.

You will enjoy working independently but with the full support of Senior Management and the wider Schlam business.

This position is a full-time, permanent role, based in Forrestfield, Western Australia.

You will be

  • Providing expertise in product knowledge in heavy fabrication, materials processes and quality control standards.
  • Implementing lean manufacturing principles such as waste elimination, FIFO, one-piece flow, Kanban, continuous flow and synchronized production chains. 
  • Analysing and planning efficient workspace utilisation and requirements for optimal efficiency.
  • Collaborating with the Manufacturing team to optimise our workforce and equipment usage using tools such as standardised work sheets, balancing and levelling.
  • Developing value stream maps, conducting time studies and designing detailed area layouts.
  • Assessing cost benefits and evaluating business cases.
  • Engaging with our global teams on product quality, manufacturing techniques, tools, and fixtures to ensure efficient production standardisation and methods.
  • Consulting with vendors and suppliers on best practices, innovations, equipment and materials.
  • Providing analytical insights based on data to tackle manufacturing challenges effectively.

You will possess

  • A Tertiary Qualification in Engineering or hold a trade certification.
  • Experience in the application of Lean Six Sigma and a demonstrated track-record in its application in heavy fabrication manufacturing processes.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience is preferred in these industries:
    • Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering
    • Oil and Gas: Offshore platforms, refineries, and other infrastructure 
    • Mining large machinery fabrication, processing plants, and infrastructure
    • Heavy Equipment Manufacturing: such as cranes, excavators, and industrial machinery
    • Renewable Energy: construction of wind turbines and other renewable energy infrastructure
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills.
  • Outstanding team and communication skills (oral & written) including strong negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to organise and prioritise demands.
  • Proven project management skills.
