Ventia is looking for an experienced Mechanical Estimator (structural mechanical and piping - SMP) to join our Infrastructure Services Team.
About the Role
The role works within the Utility Services sector to develop and deliver competitive winning estimates and offers that meet our client's needs. It involves all aspects of pricing delivery, including estimate coordination, pricing strategy, preparation, and review through Ventia's governance process, cost estimating, cashflow analysis and reporting and Liaison with various business. This is a hybrid role where your time can be split between working from home and in the office. You will be required to collaborate and cooperate with teams throughout Ventia
You will be accountable for:
- Understanding the scope, contract, and cost drivers to provide accurate tender submissions which includes documentation, approval process and internal approval meetings
- Provide the output of pricing schedules and supporting assumptions/pricing notes in client or internal format for tender submission
- Prepare estimates, labour costs calculations and cost estimates for all tenders requiring quoting
- Provide input to assist with the development of tender programs
- Prepare indicative assumptions at the commencement of bids to guide appropriate governance process
- Drive information gathering utilising budgets, historical data, past estimates, and business unit subject matter experts to build up costs estimates
- Liaise with the commercial team on alternate pricing strategies to drive higher success rates and deliver pricing strategies to optimise gross margins and market competitiveness
- Create cashflow from the cost estimate and consult with the commercial and finance teams to improve cashflow for the business
- Assist with the provision of proforma pricing schedules issued to suppliers and subcontractors and subsequent review and evaluation of received information to incorporation into the estimated cost build, in consultation with the business units purchasing and subcontractor management teams
- Actively participate in Risk and Opportunity identification and workshops, lead discussions regarding risk and opportunities through estimating or quoting processes
- Progress governance requirements through the Salesforce Gate process
- Participate in the hand-over of successful tenders to the Operations and Supporting teams by preparing basis of estimate and cost summaries
- Provide handover and debrief of estimate build-up to the Finance, Commercial, and Operations Manager to assist with contract negotiations, budgeting, forecasting, and implementation of the project
- Manage relationships and identify, evaluate, liaise, and negotiate with subcontractors, equipment, and material suppliers
- Participate in client discussions to clarify performance aspects of tenders
- Initiate and maintain estimating procedures and ensure compliance
- Willingness to work on opportunities outside the primary discipline supporting other internal sectors such as Resources, Environmental, Power & Gas

To be successful in this role you will be required to:
- Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering
- Sound experience in estimating and a background in commercial and pricing strategy
- Minimum 5 years' experience in SMP estimating ideally in Power, Water, Oil & Gas or Mining industries
- Excellent Microsoft Excel skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Solid understanding of contract commercials
- Experienced in driving alternative pricing strategies to stay competitive in a complexed market
- Strong team player who is willing to learn and take on new capabilities
